SANTUAAI is an organization that prevents and mitigates the cruelty towards wild animals that have been abused and abandoned by circuses and private owners in Mexico and Latin America.
Mexico approved some laws on December 2014. They banned the use of wild animals in circuses, without concrete solutions to the new destination of 2,500 animals that currently live in this places.
The deadline for circuses to define the destiny of these animals is very close (July 8, 2015) however, no one has given a solution to what will happen to all the 2,500 animals:
-They cannot be returned to their natural habitat due to abuse and modification of their behaviors.-Zoos cannot take responsability for these animals due to their capacity and the needs that are required to take good care of them.
It is illegal to just kill these animals, but since they don't serve a financial purpose anymore, their futures are at risk, many of them will be sold to canned hunters, private owners, terrible zoos or will take part on illegal trade.
Many circuses are taking advantage of the july 8 deadline. They are selling big cats and other animals to hunters and taxidermists.
SANTUAAI Foundation has been created to solve this terrible problem.
Our goal is to build THE FIRST WILD ANIMAL SANCTUARY IN LATIN AMERICA for big cats, bears, elephants and others. Our challenge is to build this refuge in MEXICO CITY, creating a place where they can live in dignity the rest of their lives.
With this Animal Sanctuary we will engage not only with the rehabilitation of individuals but also their permanent care and enrichment, avoiding situations that threaten their well being.
SANTUAAI has already paid for a year's rent of 345 acres for the refuge. We are trying to raise the money necesary to finish the sanctuary so we can save as many animals as possible before the government's deadline (JULY 8).
