Sandra Bland affectionately referred to as Sandy by many who knew and loved her was a vibrant, outspoken and intelligent 28-year-old young woman.  She entered this world with a mission and purpose; and from that day forth she made a tremendous impression on others with a trailblazing spirit of activism, advocacy, and an uncompromising passion for equality until she departed this world.

A 2009 Prairie View A&M alum, Sandy had recently returned to Texas to begin a new employment opportunity with her alma mater. On Friday, July 10, 2015, Sandy was pulled over by a Texas State Trooper for failure to signal before changing lanes. The traffic stop escalated to an unlawful arrest at the Waller County Jail.  On Monday, July 13, 2015, Sandy was found dead in her jail cell.  The circumstances surrounding her death are at best unclear and given the information shared by Waller County officials to date, is very disturbing. Sandy was a precious daughter, cherished sister, niece, cousin, Soror and dear friend.  Laid to rest peacefully on Saturday, July 25, 2015, she will be grieved for immensely by all those who had the pleasure of understanding the blossoming of a young woman discovering her voice which resonated with those who truly relished in the moments to listen to her speak her truth, a truth anchored in God and love.

Sandra’s untimely death has garnered national attention and reignited social awareness regarding racial disparities within community policing specifically amongst African American citizens.  Now that she has been laid to rest, the real battle begins as we seek to understand #whathappenedtoSandraBland while she was in police custody for 72 hours.  Although the family continues to grieve, all efforts are being made to seek out the truth.  If Sandy’s story has touched your heart, we ask that you join us as we move forward in pursuing #justiceforSandy.  We thank you for your commitment to social justice and for standing in solidarity with our family.

Please be aware that this fundraising message is approved by Sandra Bland’s family on behalf of her mother, Geneva Reed-Veal and her sisters Shante Needham, Sharon Cooper, Shavon Bland and Sierra Cole.

UPDATE FROM SANDRA BLAND'S FAMILY...

Dear Family & Friends,

There are no words to express our gratitude and appreciation for the love and support you've shown in response to the untimely death of our beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend. In 6 days with the generous contributions of approximately 400+ people who were touched by Sandy's story, we raised a total of $15,927 as of July 21, 2015.

It is imperative that we thank you all for your sacrificial display of support. As a result, we will be able to bring our girl home later this week PRAISE GOD, finalize her funeral arrangements and give her a proper burial. In the midst of a truly difficult time, the creation of perfectly worded phrases such as #sandyspeaks #sandySTILLspeaks #whathappenedtosandrabland #justiceforsandy and #sayhername have enveloped this family with comfort while raising social awareness regarding an issue that has happened far too frequently. We thank you sincerely from the depths of our heart.

We have received several requests from supporters regarding how they can contribute to Sandy's cause in light of national media attention her case has received. Please visit Sharon Cooper's Facebook page for more details on Sandra's legal defense fund.

To the people who have left mean and vile comments -- thank you. Thank you for letting us see what is wrong with this country. We appreciate that you crawled from under your rock and into the light of day. You can't stop love. You can't stop the support. As silly as it sounds, we wish you the best and hope that you'll be a part of the change that Sandra's story is making. Because it's coming.

I hope that the family shares the results of the Autopsy, as Texas M.E.'s have issues. My son, Joshua, 19, was found dead in Amsler Park, McGregor, on Feb 16, 2006. I continue my fight, but my finances are tight. I need to file a Court Petition, to force an Inquest, per Texas Code of Criminal Procedures, Art. 49.01-49.04

I want to support this campaign financially and have already shared it with all of my social media friends. Quite a few of them have signed petitions supporting the investigation. I have to say however, that the #blacklivesmatter and the appeal to the 'black supporters only' is divisive, all lives matter. A lot of white people including myself and many of my friends want answers to what happened to Sandra, please don't alienate our voice in your request for help. I also felt that the cry for a march needs to be tempered with wisdom so as not to get an out of control angry situation which could divert attention from getting to the truth. Compassion and change needs to come from all races and genders. We all want the truth, fairness and justice! Peace be with you and please include us on your team!!! So sorry for your loss.
