24012614_1505955172.9374_funddescriptionMany of you are already aware of the health issues , Sam Hill, has been dealing with for a little over a month. We are good friends of his beautiful mother, Melissa. She is unaware that we are starting this go fund me account. If you know her like we do, you know she is a prideful woman. She does not want pity but we all know this family needs support. So far,  the outpouring of love, prayers, cards and gifts have been so incredible to watch. In chatting privately with Melissa,  it became evident to us, that while all of those things are enough for her and the rest of the family, the stress of how she and Sam’s dad Tom will be able to deal with the financial implications that the road ahead of them has been constantly on their minds. No parent should ever have to deal with the added stress of money, when the stress of having a sick child is heavy enough. In times like these, we all feel the urge to help but often don't know how.  The medical bills are beginning  to come with no end in sight, time off with our pay, medications, travel expenses are becoming overwhelming and will only continue in the coming months and possibly years. It's become very clear to Melissa and Tom that their beautiful boy will inevitably be receiving a liver transplant because of the damage Wilsons Disease has already caused. This  will continue to result in missed days of work for both parents, medical bills from multiple tests, procedures,  medications, surgeries and possibly extended stays in the hospital. They need our help. Even if you can only give 5 dollars, it's 5 dollars less they'll need to stress over. Thank you! Alyssa & Lauren

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

UPDATE from Melissa

I need to apologize first off for not doing an update sooner. I sometiems forget that not everyone is my facebook friend and sees my updates on Sam!
Of late Sam is doing pretty well considering. He has had two really good weeks of very little issues. Prior to these past two weeks Sam has been in and out of the hospital for varies things. The asites (fluid) seems to be the thing that creates the most problems. Sam will have to 2 to 3 liters removed from his lungs and his stomach periodically which always results in hospital stays.
His doctors stay amazed at how well he looks considering how bad his insides are. We give all the glory to God for that. Sam is on the liver transplant list, but of course there is no timeline as to when one will become avaialble. Its hard to know that a new liver will take this disease away from my boy, that it will take him from 32 pills a day down to a few and not find myself being very impatient I just want my boy to be healed.
Some good news is that Sam was given the green light to play baseball. He has to wear some extra equipment to keep him safe as the fear of internal bleeding is a concern, but he is one happy guy being able to be back out on the field.
We are working hard to try and advocate and spread awareness as much as we can. I want everyone in the world to know about Wilson’s Disease! The earlier the dignosis the better odds for little damage.
We are so thankful for all the donations to Sam’s medical fund thus far. I never thought about how much this sort of thing would cost us out of pocket and we have pretty decent insurance, but the out of pocket expenses from medical bills, prescribtions, travel, time off from work without pay, hospital stays, food while there .... has really added up and your love and generosity has helped us tremendously. I cant even bring myself to think or worry what the cost of the transplant will be. We are trusting in God to provide a way when that time comes.
We love you all and are so thankful for each of you and we feel so blessed!
We pray God’s blessings on each of you!

Love

*Update from Melissa*

Hi everyone!! It's not been that long since my last update on Sam, but a few additional things has taken place that I wanted to share with you all.
After being discharged from UVA on 11-27 Sam continues to do well and was seen back at UVA for follow up on the ascites that had built back up in his lungs and stomach area. At that appointment his lungs looked much better and so did the stomach... thank the Lord! The next week on 12-6 Sam had another endoscopy procedure done to check his esophagus to see if any portal varices had developed. Unfortunately, two new varices were present. These new varices had developed within a month and a half of the first ones he had and these two were bigger than the first ones. We were very disappointed to get this news. Yet another sign that Sam's liver is declining more. They banded the two new varices and Sam was admitted to the hospital once again due to that. He recovered well and we were able to go home the next evening. Due to the last month of activities with the fluid building up in his lungs and now the new varices the Doctors have said "enough is enough" sam is well beyond the 3 strikes your out place and so the transplant team has increased Sam's MELD score and moved him up the list! What does that mean????? Well honestly it's still a waiting game. A liver could become available for Sam tomorrow, or in six months or it could be a year. In the meantime, we will continue to do our best to provide Sam with the care he needs to keep him as healthy as possible. BUT we are fully aware that as each day passes and a liver doesn't become available Sam's liver will just get more and more tired and sick and so will Sam! It's a hard thing to go through knowing you really have no control and you very well may have to watch your child get very sick! Prayers for me to stay strong for Sam would be appreciated.
Sam continues to amaze me and inspire me with his faith, strength, positivity and determination!!! He is truly a remarkable young man and I am beyond blessed to be able to be his Momma!
I want to thank each of you that have called, texted, provided gift cards, donated to the go fund me page, given us donations directly, cooked meals for us, or any form of love you have shown to us!!! I could never say thank you enough and I pray that once things settle down some I can somehow personally thank each of you. I pray God blesses you all for your beautiful hearts!
We love you all!!!

*Update 11-27-17 from Melissa*
Sam continues to amaze me with his strength, determination and positive attitude! He is truly a remarkable young man!
Sam was admitted to UVA over the weekend. The discovered he had significant fluid on his right lung. They drained 2 1/2 liters off his lung andn1 1/2 liters off his stomach area on Saturday evening. By Late Sunday afternoon all that fluid had returned. Since then here are a few
things to update you all on ...
*the fluid on Sam's lung is back.
*they have decided not to drain it or insert a tube at this time.
* the CT scan showed that the fluid is coming from the ascites which is all associated with the liver disease.
*his breathing is much better
*his pulse oxygen is better
*his heart rate is better
* they have increased his diuretics and started a new one in hopes to control the fluid build up a little better.
*they will be meeting as a team to discuss Sam once again to determine where they go from here as far as the transplant goes with this new development.
* They want Sam to change is diet a little and decrease his sodium intake. Hopefully this will also help with the fluid build up as well.
*the latest copper level testing showed that the syprine (really expensive meds I talked about for the Wilson Disease) is doing its job!!!! So thankful for that!!

Sam is being discharged at this time. Sam will be back over here on Wednesday for more labs, ultrasound and x-ray to check the fluid in the lung. We are thankful to be going home!!!! I pray the fluid doesn't build even more and create breathing issues like what sent us over here to begin with.

*Update from Melissa* 11-7-17

Hello friends and family!!! It's been awhile since I've done an update on Sam. We've had a busy few weeks. Sam continues to amaze me with how tough, strong, and determined he is. Most days Sam feels good! He continues to get tired more easily and this is to be expected. He has had some bad days with his medicines, but overall he is doing well with them. Sam's platelet levels continue to drop and his bilirubin levels continue to increase. We finished the last portion of the liver transplant consultation two weeks ago and Sam's case was presented to the transplant committee last week. They have decided that it is in Sam's best interest to be placed on the the liver transplant list. However, they are not listing him as a high priority at this time. Sam isn't incredibly sick at this time and the Doctors all want to see how Sam's body is going to respond to all the different treatment methods they have been trying the last few months. They will continue to monitor Sam on a weekly basis with labs and testing and provide the best care they can for him while we wait to see what will happen. The syprine medicine that was so expensive did increase this time, but thankfully it wasn't anything crazy like $26,000 . We are still waiting for it to arrive at this point. It was supposed to be here over a week ago and still hasn't gotten to us. He is going to miss several days dosage which has me all bent out of shape, but they assure me it will be here by the end of the week. Praying that it does!
Sam's ascites (fluid) has increasingly gotten worse and he has had some issues with that. Lots of pressure that leaves him feeling like his lungs are being pressed on. They have started two new medications to try to help with that. Sam is scheduled to have an in clinic visit on November 16th. They will do more labs and check his ascites as well that day. They will also go over the results of the last 24 hour urine test that was done. That test was done to see what the copper levels are now that he has being taking the syprine for a month. Lots of prayers that the copper level is down would be appreciated. Sam hopefully will also be fitted for a spleen guard at this appointment so he can play baseball this season. He is very excited about that.
Overall things have been going pretty good. We have had to make some unexpected trips to uva for issues that have come up but all those visits ended well thankfully. We continue take it day by day.
We want to thank each of you for any act of kindness you have shown us. The calls, texts, cards, donations have all been so appreciated and we could never say thank you enough for your Love!
We are still believing and trusting in God for Sam's healing! Our faith is strong that God will provide a way.
We love you all!
