Sam Waymon Healing&Housing Support

Donation protected
Help support music legend, Sam Waymon (brother and musical partner of the legendary Nina Simone).

In January, our community joined together in support of Dr. Samuel Waymon, when he was evicted fromf his residence in Nyack, NY with little warning. Sam and his belongings were removed from his apartment and in that moment he was faced with nowhere to go. With the generosity of friends and the Nyack musical community, we were able place him in a temporary living situation that sadly finished before permanent housing could be secured. He is still working with his attorney to get back into his former housing situation, but that is at least a month or so away.

As if temporary housing weren’t unsettling enough, last month Sam found out he would need to undergo a second round of radiation treatment for a very rare form of skin cancer he was initially diagnosed with back in 2014. This type of skin cancer develops from the cells that line lymph or blood vessels. It usually appears as tumors on the skin and can develop in other parts of the body, such as in the lymph nodes (bean-sized collections of immune cells throughout the body), the lungs, or digestive tract. The abnormal cells form purple, red, or brown blotches or tumors on the skin. This can happen on the legs and feet and cause the legs and feet to swell painfully. It’s a difficult road to travel, but with the support of community and an ever- present optimistism,  Sam continues to bravely battle this cancer.

Many people know Sam as the manager, confidante, organist and best friend to his sister, the legendary Nina Simone, who is being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this week.
He is thankful that Rolling Stone Magazine is flying him to Cleveland to proudly receive this award in her honor. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2018/04/nina_simones_brother_to_repres.html

But Dr. Waymon in his own right is an Award-winning composer, musician, singer, pianist, and arranger/producer, actor and civil rights activist.  For Decades, Sam has positively contributed to the arts community in NYC and his home of Nyack, most recently participating in the Songs of Protest 2 event sponsored by ArtsRock. His performances are electric and gives of his time and talents with unmatched generosity.  He is a soulful, optimistic man who can still do a heel click in the air, even after receiving weeks of radiation therapy in his foot. If there is a cause that needs supporting, Sam has been there.
At 74 years old, Sam continues to write, record, and perform in NYC, Nyack and beyond. He a dedicated teacher, and is about to release a new album called SHINE. He is set to perform April 20, from 8 to 10 p.m. at Harlem's Shrine World Music Venue, fronting "Sam Waymon and the Magic Band" (www.shrinenyc.com). He’ll also be playing on May 11 locally at Maureen's Jazz Cellar in Nyack, with Jeff Doctorow, in a gig called "Piano Meets Guitar," at 8 and 9:30 p.m. (www.maureensjazzcellar.com).
Sam is doing the very best he can to right his situation but we need to come together in continued support. It is important during this time of treatment that Sam’s stress be reduced and his living situation be secure in order for him to fully heal. His prognosis is favorable but he needs our continued generosity to help.
Thank you in advance for sharing this GoFundMe and for your unwavering support of this musical legend.
