SALMONFOLK.com is a film series that is in the filming phase of production. This series will take the viewer on a journey across the globe and across time to discover a true story of survival that links wild salmon, factory fish farming, indigenous cultures, dedicated scientists, passionate activists and a groundbreaking new book.
I am fundraising to cover travel costs for filming at location #1 on Vancouver Island, British Columbia and my trip leaves in early August 2018.
What'll I be doing? Good question! Here's what I have planned so far!
-Filming Locations: Tofino, Ucluelet, Sointula, Campbell River, Victoria, Sidney
-Meeting with First Nations and regional activists who are working hard to remove the factory fish farms that are decimating wild salmon to the point of near extinction...Discussing the history of colonialism on First Nations communities and in relation to their relationship with wild salmon
-Traveling with Norwegian based author, Martin Lee Mueller, about his groundbreaking book, Being Salmon, Being Human.
-Following the performance tour of Being Salmon, Being Human, with Martin Lee Mueller, Sami musician and performer - Torgier Vassvik, and storyteller- Georgiana Keable, to share a series of live performances based on his book.
-Interviewing and meeting with Dennis Reid, a dedicated blogger on all things wild salmon at www.fishfarmnews.blogspot.com
-Meeting with Adam Olsen, MLA- interviewing this passionate BC Green Party member for Saanich North and the Islands who is a fierce fighter for wild salmon...he is also First Nations!
-Filming activist Rama Delarosa as she swims 100 KM around an island in the Salish Sea to raise funds to protect the dwindling population of Orcas in the region.
-Meeting with First Nations in the Saanich area about their past history, drift reef net revival and stories of salmon culture.
History of fundraising for this trip:
In April/May of 2018 I successfully fundraised $2190 in a previous GoFundMe campaign for this trip.
On that trip I was staying in Alert Bay, BC for the entire trip. No rental car, and likely free camping the whole time. A very inexpensive trip, relatively speaking. My costs were covered.
Then literally one day before my departure, my mom (who I live close to) was hospitalized with blood clots in both lungs. I had to canx. my trip and filming.
My trip to film in Vancouver Island is FINALLY back ON! But this is not the same trip as before. When I rebooked the ticket prices had jumped quite a lot and on this trip I am now going to be meeting with people all over Vancouver Island! Though I will be camping some I'll need a rental car the whole time, some hotel stays, etc. In essence it's just a much more expensive trip.
