Dominica Hurricane Relief

$20,900 of $20,000 goal

I am reaching out to help the people of the hurricane stricken island of Dominica. I was born and grew up on this Caribbean island, and want to do my part to help the people recuperate from the total devestation left behind by Hurricane Maria. With all the attention on Houston, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, the island  will get little aid from other countries, and I am asking for support to help these wonderful people rebuild their lives. I will insure the funds are spent in the best way, even if it means going there myself to oversee the distribution. My gratitude will be overcome by the people whose lives will be mended and changed forever. Thank you for your generosity.

As an update, I have been in communication with several people I know on the island and have established that I am going to work on the schools in the village of Soufriere and Scotts Head  that were both devestated. Schools have not been able to open and yet there are efforts by the teachers to get the kids together in tents and work with them. I will be working with Simon Walsh, a resident of Soufriere, who has already brought boatloads of supplies to the village from the neighboring island of St. Lucia. We will be focusing on building supplies to get the schools reopen, and text books etc. Once that has been established and Simon has ordered and recieved the supplies, I will go down there to help get it organized. That probably wont be for at least another month but I will keep all of you kind donors updated. Thanks again.

Hello Donors,
I am still in communication with my contact on the island who is making a list of what the schools need most. He wanted to wait until things settled a bit. The big challenge has been in getting the products to the island and once it gets there it is taking forever to get it distributed, but he is working on it. I will keep you posted.

Hi kind donors,
I want to give you an update on progress of the Dominica Relief Fund. I have been in touch with a couple of friends living on the island for advice as to where the $ raised would be best spent. They said that things are moving very slowly on the island and that there are shipments of food and some supplies coming in. Cell service is still down and many roads still not passable. Neighboring islands have been most helpful but with the emphasis on Puerto Rico, it is going to take some time for the smaller islands that have been hurt badly to recuperate. I thought I could help a couple of the village schools that have not been able to open and I have made contact with a friend there who can advise me. If its basic materials, or something like a small solar powered generator, small computer or some clothes, etc., and I should know soon what's best. I will have to withdraw the funds in my name, set up a small acct with 1st Republic, and be able to pay suppliers directly. I will order and pay for what I find, and have it shipped to the island to my friend there that I trust. I have contacted a Florida shipping company that goes to Dominica. I will then go down and make sure it gets delivered. It is a process that will take some time and I will keep you appraised of my progress. I assure you that your donation will make a difference and I thank you again for your kindness.

We are getting messages from someone who has gone to the island and has told us of the urgency of the needs of the people. We are increasing our goal and hope that we can truly make a difference in their lives. So far we have had some very generous donations and I am working with some people from Florida who will help me in getting supplies to the island. The little communication I have gotten tells me that water filtration systems, building materials and food are now the most urgent need. Thank you for all your support in helping. It means so much to all.
