Created November 7, 2017

On November 3, 2017, our lives were forever changed when a falling tree took the life of 31-year-old Ryan Grimaldi. This loss has been devestating to our family and all who knew him.

Ryan was an amazing human being, an avid hunter, a great friend, selfless, giving, and a professional firefighter who was willing to risk his life for a stranger in need. He would talk to anyone, anywhere, always had a story to share, and was quick to make new friends.  He was engaged to my sister, Andrea Tardio, who is also a professional firefighter.  He was everything you could hope for in a future brother-in-law.

Andrea and Ryan have been together for over 10 years and were planning to get married next August. In February of 2016, they purchased their dream home on a piece of rural property in Yamhill County. They have spent the last year and a half upgrading the home and property. They just finished building a new horse barn less than two months ago.

Unfortunately,  Andrea will not be able to pay the current mortgage and home equity loan that was used to finance the new barn on her salary alone. This fund is being started for her benefit, to provide emergency financial assistance while she is grieving this sudden loss.

Our goal is to raise enough funds to pay off the home equity loan.  We want to ensure Andrea will be able to continue living on her property, a place that will always hold special memories of Ryan for her.

Ryan’s Celebration of Life will be at Liberty High School 7445 NE Wagon Drive, Hillsboro, OR 97124 on Saturday November 11th at 1:00 pm.

Immediately following Ryan's Celebration of Life there will be a reception at
Fellow's Arena 5990 SW Fern Hill Rd, Forest Grove, OR 97116 hosted by Dennis and Gerri Fellows.

No Celebration of Life for Ryan would be complete without a hockey game. Portland Winterhawk's have reached out to us and are dedicating their game that evening at 6:00pm in memory of Ryan. Please join us if you can at Moda Center 1 N Center Ct St, Portland, OR 97227.

The family of Ryan Grimaldi would be honored.

Hello everyone,

I would like to make you aware of a GoFundMe page for another Hillsboro Fire Fighter, Steve Layzell:

https://www.gofundme.com/medical-fund-for-steve-layzell

Steve is one of two chaplains with the Hillsboro Fire Department and was a friend of Ryan's. He spent a good chunk of time with me after Ryan's death. He is now fighting for his life after an automobile accident in Canada.

Please share his Go Fund Me page and consider donating. Steve has spent his entire life in service to others and needs our help now.

Thank you,
-Dave

Hello again,

We have received word that all refunds have been processed. A number of you have asked if there were problems with your donation or why your gift was refunded. Please see below for the message that was sent a month ago to explain the decision to refund everyone.

Thank you again for responding to our request for help during a time of need.

Hello Everyone,

As it turns out, Andrea was listed as a beneficiary on some basic life insurance through Ryan’s employer. This benefit will eliminate the financial crisis this GoFundMe campaign was created for. Per Andrea’s wishes, the process of refunding all donors has begun. GoFundMe customer support tells us that it may take 10-14 days before you will see your refund.

If you still wish to make a donation after receiving your refund, Andrea suggests doing so to the Hillsboro Fire Department’s Annual Toy & Joy drive. The Toy & Joy Drive is operated by Hillsboro Firefighters Random Acts Inc. Donations can be made online at https://hfra.us/donate or you may mail your donation to:

Hillsboro Firefighters Random Acts Inc.
P.O. Box 895
Hillsboro, OR 97123

If you would prefer that your donation go directly to Andrea, you may mail your gift to:

Lake Oswego Fire Department
ATTN: Andrea Tardio
P.O. Box 369
Lake Oswego, OR 97034

Andrea and I thank you for all of the love and support you have shown during this difficult time.

It has come to our attention that it is entirely possible that Andrea may have been named as a beneficiary on a life insurance policy or retirement account through Ryan's employer.

Andrea has asked me to let everyone know that your gifts will be instantly refunded if this turns out to be true. The only reason this campaign exists is to provide financial stability and to hopefully pay off their home equity line of credit so that she isn't forced to sell their home that is full of wonderful memories.

Thank you for your support!
