Ryan Forbes “The Fighter”

At age 39 , Ryan Forbes, of Kemptville Ontario, was given an unexpected diagnosis....everyone’s worst nightmare. Stage 4 Cancer. This news came just a year after his beloved daughter, Lola The Little Miracle underwent open heart surgery at age 2.
Ryan's official diagnosis is: Adenocarcinoma ex Goblet Cell Carcinoid, of appendiceal origin with peritoneal carcinomatosis. This is a very rare cancer with a poor prognosis. For Ryan, his wife Julia and the rest of the family, there was only 1 option "WE WILL FIGHT" - and another miracle WILL happen.
Not only is Ryan an amazing father, and husband, he is loyal to his friends and family and always has a smile on his face. His outgoing personality and positive attitude is infectious.
Preliminary treatment is starting in less than a week, beginning with 6 intense rounds of FolFox chemotherapy given at The Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre as an out-patient (1 day of chemo on-site, rest an recover at home for 13 days, restart!). The Forbes family has a long road ahead. Ryan is a fighter, but needs your support.
As you can expect, the emotional and financial stress arising from the unknown road ahead is looming. Costs for time off work, weeknight/weekend childcare needs, hospital parking, travel to and from kemptville for appointments, meal preparation, counselling, and any future treatment plans not covered by insurance will add up quickly.

**Update from March 2019**
Lauren here, providing a long awaited update to this page on the status of Ryan’s cancer fight. Catching up since we last posted in November - Ryan completed 12 rounds of chemo and then travelled to Toronto for a 3rd opinion diagnostic surgery with a specialist. With Julia and his parents by his side, Ryan woke up from surgery to the heart crushing news that he is not a candidate for CRS/HIPEC, the potential life saving procedure for his rare cancer. The investigative surgery revealed extensive disease in almost all areas of the abdomen and alongside a vital organ, ultimately deemed inoperable and incurable.
Ryan will start chemo again this week, while Julia continues to apply for clinical trials, seek out other specialists’ opinions and look into alternative medicine. His prognosis is poor and the reality this family is facing is devastating. Ryan will be off work indefinitely, and most of their next step options and treatments will not be fully covered by insurance.
This loving, compassionate and kind family continues to be dealt a bad hand at the table. They are exhausted and defeated but do their best to remain strong for Lola and each other.
We all wish we could take their pain away. I know the one burden we do have the ability to ease, is financial and that is why we are starting up another round of fundraising for #DieselsArmy
Know that the funds raised will be provided as a gift to this family, to help ease their worries in whatever capacity that may be. Whether it is for treatments, medical travel or simply for quality of life - this is our gift to them from an army that cares.
