Keep Ruth’s legacy alive!

Ruth Tunstall-Grant was an acclaimed artist and a warrior for children’s rights and social justice in Santa Clara County and beyond, who nurtured the creative spark in all she met.  Ruth’s unselfish service and untiring advocacy for the arts and youth inspired many creative activists. Telling her story also spotlights her many collaborators, both within and beyond the art scene.  South Bay Area arts—and the lives of many people—would not be what they are today, if not for Ruth.

Here are just a few of Ruth’s innovative cultural contributions:

·         The first art education brought directly to underserved San José schools

·         Genesis, a space for the arts and music, at three downtown locations

·         The art program at the Santa Clara County Children’s Shelter

·         Hands on the Arts Festival in Sunnyvale, now entering its 33rd year

In addition to creating many ongoing arts programs, Ruth left behind paintings, prints and documents—a visual record of her life’s work as a cornerstone of today’s South Bay arts.

We need your help to preserve and extend Ruth’s legacy. We are raising funds to:

·         Hire an archivist to organize and preserve Ruth’s papers and document her art, creating a comprehensive record of Ruth’s art and cultural influence

·         Mount an exhibition in appreciation of her important community work

·         Publish a compelling catalogue

·         Host a community celebration

Please honor her continuing influence on all our lives by giving to the Ruth Tunstall-Grant Archive campaign—not only to foster appreciation, but to demonstrate the potential for inventing new ways of ‟being an advocate for the creative power we all have, bringing back creativity and light into people’s lives.”

Thanks for your support of the Ruth Tunstall Grant Archive! We're making great progress on cataloging Ruth's artwork and curriculum vitae; and there is currently an exhibit of her work at the San Jose City College Gallery in the Fine Arts Building. The reception will take place on Thursday, November 8 at 5 pm. We've increased our fundraising goal in order to publish a book on Ruth's work that will accompany a larger exhibit at the Triton Museum in May 2019.
