Running the church

Donation protected
To celebrate my newly-discovered confidence in managing my type 1 diabetes 'on the run' I am going to be running the BM10k event on Sunday, April 9th, and my target is to raise £500 towards the running of East Hoathly church. It's a huge challenge for me to run, but thanks to my new insulin pump running has become a possibility for me. And I would like to make it count!

East Hoathly church

East Hoathly church in beautiful East Sussex is a place of regular worship, with various services appealing to a wide range of congregants, as well as a meeting place, a school classroom, a concert hall, a theatre, a resting place, a wedding venue, a place to celebrate new life and bid farewell to those who have left us, a cafe, an exhibition space, a Foodbank collection point, a supporter of charitable causes locally and beyond - and many other things.

It is the focal point of our village community, and it needs your help. There are demands on its financial reserves not only for ongoing capital projects such as repairs and maintenance, but also just to meet its day-to-day expenses, which amount to around £45,000 in a calendar year.

The run
I am running the BM10k on Sunday, April 9, and I am asking you to give what you can towards my fundraising target of £500.

Running 10km is a big, big deal for me. It's going to be a huge effort. Let me explain why.
I’d always wanted to run (in fact, to do any kind of exercise), but for medical reasons I had never had the confidence. But late in 2015, after having lived with type 1 diabetes for 29 years, I was given the opportunity to start treating my condition using an insulin pump. I very, very soon found this to be life-changing, and many of the barriers that had been limiting my day-to-day life began to lift. So, 2016 was my year to get fit! Inexperienced in all things ‘exercise’ I had a few false starts - for instance, I had no idea that the ‘wrong’ shoes could cause my feet so much distress - and yes, I have found myself in a hypoglycaemic blur several times - but at last, with my new pump, it has become possible to run with less fear of putting myself at risk than used to be the case.

So I started to run. I signed up to parkrun, which is a brilliant free 5km running event every weekend, and I joined our local running club.

Finishing the 5km Reindeer Run at Buxted Park, December 2016. You can see my insulin pump and tubing just at the top of the Santa hat that was too hot to run in!

It is to celebrate this new vigour that I’ve signed up to run the Brighton Marathon 10k, and I would like to make it count. I’ve never even done a sponsored walk before, but I’m making a commitment to use my 10km run to raise money to support the running of our church, which is the focal point of our vibrant village community.

Our church needs our support. It's there for all of us - for worship, for comfort, for support, for friendship - to get married in, to be laid to rest. I found friends there. I got married there (see below!). I'm part of the gang. When I was extremely unwell for many weeks last summer and autumn, I received so much love and support from the church community, which really, really helped. Let’s keep it going.

Please give if you can. Thank you.
