Meet Cameron.  Cameron is 9 years old.  Cameron is a typical 9 year old boy and is very active.  Cameron loves wheelchair basketball, jujitsu, playing video games and hanging out with his big sister Claire. Cameron charms every one where ever he goes with his easy going and talkative nature.

Cameron was born 2 months premature due to his mother's appendix rupture and was later diagnosed with cerebral palsy (spastic diplegia).  Cerebral Palsy impacts muscle tone, mobility, balance and co-ordination.  Cameron's legs and arms are both affected and he is often unable to perform daily tasks and is in constant discomfort.

Cameron's type of Cerebral Palsy is called Spastic Diplegia, and he will live with it his whole life. Cameron works very hard with his Physical Therapists on a weekly basis and under goes painful injections twice a year to decrease his spasticity. He still however requires a wheelchair to help him get around.

We have recently found a way to drastically improve Cameron's quality of life!

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP

Cameron is an excellent candidate for SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy) surgery.  Cameron was recently accepted by Dr. T.S. Park of St Louis Children's Hospital to have this  surgery in October of 2018.

Dr Park predicts that with this surgery:

Cameron's spasticity will be permanently reduced
His sitting and standing postures will improve.
His transitions between postures will be easier and faster.
His level of comfort will improve.
Cameron will be able to walk independently with improved balance and endurance.
It will prevent further deterioration.

We are very excited about what this means for Cameron's future.  We are however facing a huge obstacle, OHIP does not cover this surgery.

This is where you come in"

WHAT WE NEED
The total costs ($150, 000) will be for the surgery, medical equipment, travel costs and lodging (we will be in St. Louis for a month after surgery for rehabilitation), and the year following will require intense Physical Therapy with a registered PT.

Our hope is that many others will join us in helping Cameron with this life changing journey.  We can not do this without your help. No donation is too small.  Every bit will help Cameron to get closer to his goal of living an improved quality of life.  Your support will help this amazing little boy acheive independence througout his lifetime and afford him every opportunity to be whatever he wants to be.

MORE ABOUT SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy)

SDR was pioneered by DR T. S Park at the St Louis Children's Hostpital.  He is the world leader in performing this surgery. It involves surgically entering the spine to remove a portion of one vertebrae and stimulating the nerves to determine which are causing the muscle tightness associated with Cerebral Palsy.  Those nerves are then cut, essentially removing the spasticity.
