Run & Get Lit(erature)

This Sunday, October 22nd , I plan to run the Marine Corp Marathon. This will be my third marathon overall and my second of this year. Running 26.2 miles is no small feat and I for some reason decided that this would be the year I run two marathons almost a month apart.

Fundraising is a huge part of the running industry. From 5k charity walks to the Boston Marathon. Running for a cause is perhaps on of the biggest reasons why people choose to sign up for a race. Being involved in the running community you will notice people run for several different reasons. Weather it is personal reasons such as fitness goals, or a more global reasons such as bringing awareness to a specific cause like mental health. Whatever the reason, supporting individual and collective goals through running has always been a focus of mine. I have raised money in the past, but never while running a half or full marathon…but I decided to change that.

Earlier this year, the Run Crew I lead, District Running Collective was looking to make a difference in our local communities specifically within the school system. We sought out to donate school supplies and backpacks as we have done in recent years.

However, this year we had a unique response from a KIPP DC School.  They wanted to see if we could  assist in collecting books to create a "mobile library" where at least each student could have one book that they could take home. That would be around 352 books total.

To initiate this effort I decided to dedicate my Marathon to starting the initiative for this effort. My goal is to raise enough money to purchase twenty-six (26) books for this effort. One book a mile. We are estimating the cost of a children’s book at $10-$14. My goal is to raise $350 in less than a week to purchase these books for the children at KIPP DC.

Twenty-six (26) books may not seem like a lot. But in the grand scheme of things my goal is to jump start this partnership and possibly motivate more people to raise money and directly impact the community the best way I know how to...which is with my own two feet.

If you’d like to support this initiative then help me raise a few dollars as I run to get the kids some literature.
