Roy's Cancer/Transplant Fund

My name is Roy Fenimore, and I'm in desperate straits! I just found out I have liver cancer and that a liver transplant is the only chance of a long-term cure, but I'm on the edge of bankruptcy and even with insurance it's going to be very hard just to survive.

I have to admit it's my own fault. I've made a lot of bad decisions financially, and now they've caught up to me. Every month I have to decide which bills to pay on time and which to pay late. But now it's getting so that I'm not even sure I'll be able to pay them late!

I'm hoping that some kind-hearted folks will forgive my foolishness with money and help me with the co-pays for my medicine and treatments, (I need a procedure next week and then they'll put me on the list for a liver transplant.) I've had nothing but bad luck the last few months: unexpected expenses with the car, with medical problems unrelated to this. My pitiful savings are long gone. I already took out a $1000 loan to pay one bill ($2000 deductible on the insurance), but my credit has gotten so bad I can't get another.

I always thought that someday I'd get a break and turn my life around and actually pay off my credit cards and actually save some money for my old age. Now, at 62, I hope it can happen. I will be very grateful if someone can help me beat this cancer and give me the chance. I just need a break.

Can you help?

Well, the CT wasn't so good. They missed a spot, apparently, and it's growing. The Doctor mentioned in passing that there are two other little tumors, but they aren't going to worry about them now. But they are going to do another TACE (Transarterial Chemo-Embolization) on the big one. And the bills keep coming in...

Got to go to UAB (Kirklin Clinic, actually) to get a CT scan. Wish me luck! There's also going to be my semiannual chat with a nurse practitioner, to make sure I'm still alive. My mother is in a nursing home recuperating from a fall in the front yard. She tells me every day "It's no fun being old." I'm beginning to learn that for myself, especially now that I'm trying to exercise more.

Latest news: They were able to finish off that tumor with some ablation. But I don't understand: if the tumor is on the back of my liver, why did they have to stick 4 holes in my front? Oh, well, I guess transplant surgeons know that they're doing. The main problem I have with the transplant (my insurance will cover most of it), is the fact that I'm looking after my poor old 88 (soon to be 89) year-old mother. She can't cook anymore, can't drive. If I'm going to be helpless for months, how can I take care of her? I'm the only close relative within 600 miles. And if I send her off to live with one of my sisters for that time, who will look after me? And the medical bills keep rolling in....
She needs me...or somebody.

Hi, all! Just got my first (and I hope last) TACE procedure. It's all they can do to slow down the cancer.
(You can read more about that on my blog at webspanning.net if you want.) As soon as I got home I got the bill for the CT scan I got last month. Let me give you some background:

ME: You want to schedule a CT scan? I got one here in Winfield that wound up costing me $1200. I had to take out a loan that I'll be paying off for the next 30 years--if I make it to 92....

PERKY YOUNG WOMAN ON PHONE: <gasp!> He didn't clear it with your insurance first?

ME: I don't know....

MISS PERKY: Well, don't you worry! We'll make sure you are covered first!

ME: Gee, thanks!

Well I was covered; the insurance paid $3,067.72 of the $5,691.00 bill I got for the CT scan. All I have to come up with--by September 17--is a mere $2,623.28. It might as well be a million! Between car problems and medical bills my credit cards are maxed out, my pitiful savings are gone, and my credit score is creeping down daily.

Please help! Don't be embarrassed to make a small donation; every penny will be greatly appreciated.
