Ross Oden is 38 years old. He is a beloved husband, brother, and son, as well as an amazing father of four beautiful children from 1.5 to 6.5 years old.

Ross was diagnosed with Wegener's disease in 2016. For the past few months, he has been feeling unwell. On Thursday morning, Feb 1st, around 4 a.m., Ross thought he was having a heart attack. He drove himself to the hospital emergency room, where he was admitted. The staff there quickly realized that he was much worse off than he seemed at first, and that afternoon he was transferred to a hospital with a cardiac ICU.

Since that Thursday, he has been on a life-support machine called an ECMO, which operates as a mobile heart and lung machine. His heart is currently working at 10% of normal function. He has already had multiple open-heart surgeries.

The heart surgeon installed a device called a St Jude HeartMate 3 LVAD, and installed a temporary RVAD (LV for left ventricle and RV for right ventricle). These devices assist with pumping blood through the circulatory system to give the heart a chance to recover under less strain.

Ross’s recovery is going to take a long time, but his medical team is positive. He will be in cardiac ICU for at least another month, then in a recovery hospital for a month, then back at the cardiac hospital (but not in ICU hopefully) for rehab, and finally home with 24-hour nursing care for however long it takes for him to get back to normal, or as close as possible.

There is hope. Patients can recover from this type of thing. Ross’s wife, Jane, and his dad, Dale, met a man at the cardiac ICU who lived with the LVAD for years before finally needing a heart transplant, and has lived for three more years since the heart transplant. He was 37 when this happened, compared to Ross’s 38. And he is now 44. So there are plenty of reasons to be hopeful.

Ross’s family will be facing significant medical expenses and other financial burdens because of this experience. Among other things, money will be needed for extra child care and for supplementing the family’s income while Ross is recovering and unable to work.

The children already miss their daddy, whom they haven't seen in more than a week already.

Anything that you can do to help right now will be greatly appreciated by Ross and Jane and their family. Thank you so much for this, and for all of the love and support you have already shown.

Ross had a really good night tonight. When I was at the hospital, the nurse said that there weren't any more signs of bleeding. He was resting comfortably. I read to him for a couple of hours. It was a good, quiet, uneventful night. The first in a while, it seems.

Ross had open-heart surgery yesterday morning, and again last night, and again this morning. Yesterday morning's surgery was to install the LVAD and temporary RVAD. Last night was because he was bleeding too much and they wanted to see if they could stop the bleeding. They couldn't find anything last night. This morning was to try again to find the bleeding and clean things up. He is out of surgery again. I am not sure if they found what they were looking for, but they say he is bleeding much less and the output tubes are not producing any more drainage at this time, so he might be done bleeding.

For those who don't know me, I am Patrick Oden. I am Ross's older brother. I am running this campaign on behalf of Ross and his wife Jane and their four young children.

The money that you are donating will be used to pay for Ross's eventual medical expenses and for other things the family needs, like childcare and replacing the income that Ross will lose over the next many months.

All of the funds that you are donating will be going directly to Ross and Jane's family. Either Jane or I will withdraw the donations at such time as Jane decides that their family needs it. If I do the withdrawal, then I will be delivering the funds to Jane, or to Ross directly if he is capable, though that seems unlikely for quite a while now.

If Jane withdraws the funds, then no further action will be required. If I am withdrawing the funds, then I will be depositing them in a trust account with my law firm and disbursing them to Jane and Ross from there, at their request and in the manner they request (which would likely be bank transfer or cashier's check).

Let me know if you have any questions about any of this, including Ross's condition, how Jane and the kids are doing, or the donations you are giving or how you can help in other ways.

Ross had his second open-heart surgery this morning (Friday, Feb 9). There were no complications, but he was still bleeding internally somewhere after they were done. So, the surgeon had to go in again to try to find the bleeding and stop it. He went back in for surgery at around 5 pm today. We found out just now at about 8:45 pm that he is done and they are closing up!

Hopefully, the surgeon has found all the problems and fixed them. Only time will tell. This has been a difficult day for Ross.

There will not likely be anything else happening tonight, other than post-op and stabilizing Ross. He's had a hard day. Let's hope that tomorrow is better.
