The Roman Southwell Community Project seeks to investigate the Roman settlement of Southwell, Nottinghamshire and the surrounding landscape. The project is professionally led by MBArchaeology and was set up in January 2014.
Phase One - Our initial work attempted to collate all the known information about the Roman landscape of the Southwell region. We looked at documentary and archival sources, old maps, Historic Environment Records and past excavation reports. The results of this are documented on the project website, along with some of our Landscape Maps - romansouthwell.wordpress.com
Phase Two - We then started a fundraising campaign in order to fund a series of excavations within the Roman Villa landscape at Southwell. Three seasons of digging on Harvey's Field & Farthingate has seen us discover Roman ditches and flood defences, information about the river and the wider flood plain, and identify a possible settlement on Farthingate. Interim reports can be downloaded from the project website.
Phase Three – Alongside our summer digs, we also embarked on a landscape approach that saw geophysical surveys and fieldwalking undertaken to try and shed more light on to the Roman Road (Newark Road) from Southwell through to Kirklington, and Osmanthorpe Roman Fort (also at Kirklington).This phase was part-funded by a three-year small grant from the Nineveh Trust, and is due to finish in July 2018. The fieldwork started in November 2015, and revealed a large spread of Roman pottery spanning the 1st-4th centuries, and a linear feature that may well be the Roman road, as well as a second potential road linking Southwell to the villas at Thurgarton / Epperstone (to the south-west) and Norwell (to the north-east).
Phase Four - This is our current phase, running between October 2017 - July 2018 and will see us undertake survey work and geophysics back in the town in order to explore curious earthworks deemed to be either an Iron Age Hillfort or a Roman Camp. We will also be washing and repackaging all the finds from the 2017 summer dig, and leading some educational sessions for local schools.
Phase Five - We are now fundraising in order to pay for a series of training sessions and analaysis of the pottery from our excavations, so we can get some solid dating and also write up the whole three seasons and publish our findings.
We also want to have the pottery from the fields near Osmanthorpe (found in Phase Three) analysed and a Pottery Report compiled by a Roman Pot Specialist, so we can publish this alongside the geophysics results.
We are continually looking for public donations, business sponsorship and small funding grants to enable our work to continue.
