Hello Everyone, I am not a writer by any means, so I pray God gives me the right words to tell our story. And I'm throwing my stubborn pride out the window and asking for help once more. My husband Robert Popowski was one of those people that never said a bad word about anyone and was always there to help anyone who needed it. They say only the good ones die young, well he hasn't died, but he was taken from our lives and he was way to young. Robert was an offensive lineman for the University of Michigan, he went there on a full football scholarship. He loved the game and was a good player. His goal was always to serve our country in which he did for 23 yrs. He enlisted in the Army right out of college and went to OCS at Ft. Benning Ga. He had a vast Army career holding various positions. He was a great soldier. People still contact me now and tell me what great soldier, mentor or friend that he was. Rob retired in 2006 to take a job at Georgia Military College in Milledgeville Ga. He wanted to teach other cadets going into the military as his way of giving back what he had been given. One year later our life as we knew it came to a complete end. Rob was having a hard time doing the simplest of task. He was diagnosed with Huntingtons disease. Which is a genetic disease passed down from a parent. His mother died of it when Rob was young. He knew he had a chance of having it, but thought he had beaten the odds. This disease is like having Alzheimer's and Parkinson's around the age of 30. He was 42. Our daughter Aspen now has a one out of two chance of having it as well. So not only were we losing my husband, we now knew we might lose my daughter to this as well. Rob lost his job within a year. He could not keep up with his teaching assignments any longer. I also had to quit working to care for him. I lasted only six years. His care was becoming harder and harder for me to handle. His friends had a fundraiser when he was first diagnosed, but the funds are now almost depleted. A friend suggested I try go fund me. The reason I'm trying to raise money is so I can cover some of our nursing home, insurance and medical fees, so I can help my daughter go to college with the monthly income he receives. Which will drop a good bit, because once Aspen turns 18 in March we lose her social security. Right when we need it the most. Social security used to cover children if they were in college, but they stopped that years ago. Which is so sad for families like ours. But we've have been very blessed. He was able to get into the Ga. War Veterans nursing home, here in Milledgeville. He didn't qualify for VA services, but because it's a war veterans home he qualified because he served in Iraqi. If that had not happened I would have lost my house and his income. I truly think God put us in Milledgeville for that very reason. About Aspen, she's just an awesome young woman. She inspires me. She is so much like Rob. She has been attending the very college that he taught at. It's taken all my extra pennies, but she has attended the Ga. Military Prep School since 6th grade. I knew then I had to give her the best education I could, because she has always been an excellent student. That was the smartest thing I've ever done, and she has made every penny well spent. She has worked hard. She has been enrolled in a duel college program since her junior year. So she has several college classes under her belt already. Hope scholarship covered those classes. She will get more scholarships, she has what it takes, but it won't be enough. I can't even cover her food at this point. When he lost his job and I had quit mine to care for him, the college fund went out with the bath water so to speak. The reason this is so important is because Rob gave me the most precious gift ever, Aspen. And he knew what having an education meant. He would have made this happen no matter what. She has no memory of her Papa being normal, she never knew the active, vibrant and wonderful man he was. What she does recall was him living with Huntingtons. She saw what this disease has done to him and us as a family, as well as our son. And through it all this child has worked diligently to get through school with great grades in order to qualify for scholarships. That has always been her goal. At two, she would tell everyone she was going to go to college at Harvard Law. She saw that in a movie and it stuck. She has always strived. Wasn't ever if she went to college, but where. She's so smart, got that from her papa as well. I've never had to check a report card since 6th grade. She's that responsible. She's a 17yr old that's never done anything to put herself or her educational future at risk. I mean good kid. And through all this she knows that she has that one out of two risk for this horrific disease. That has never slowed her down if anything she's been more determined to get all she can out of life before that chance comes. She is her daddy's child. He truly accomplished so much in his 42 yrs and touched so many people's lives. He really was that guy. I've been so honoured that he choice me to be his wife. And blessed that God trusted me to care for him in his time of need and for our daughter as well. Aspen just found out she was accepted to Young Harris College not Harvard Law. It's a small Methodist college in North Ga. I've never seen her so happy then the day she was notified. This was her first choice. And all I could think about while she was jumping for joy is how am I gonna be able to help her. This has weighed on my mind non stop. So I'm asking for help for him and her. Pride tells me no, I will find a way without asking for help, but that falls at the way side when it's for your family. I hope I gave our story justice. Please pray for us and all the families out there affected by Huntingtons disease. I've met so many wonderful families living with this daily. Pray they find a cure in the very near future. So we can stop the devastation it causes by taking our loved ones slowly away. And I would like to say Thank You so much for taking the time out to read our story and if you can donate thank you from the bottom of my heart for your extreme kindness. There are so many wonderful people out there willing to give their hard earned money to help families like us. You're all angels, and if you cant donate, a prayer for us and all families touched by Huntingtons will be such a blessing. Take care and God bless, Jodi Popowski
