An iPad for Riley Mae
RILEY'S STORY
Ever since a very young age, Riley has been in and out of hospitals with various illnesses. At just 8 weeks old, she was hospitalized with RSV, and endured a 2 night stay in the pediatric ICU. At just 3 months old, she was referred to a pediatric cardiologist to find she had a heart murmur as well as parallel lung murmurs. Her life has been full of ups and downs ever since. She has battled numerous serious ear infections and braved through surgery for tubes in her ears, underwent a lumbar puncture, and fought off a case of pneumonia before she was just 4 months old. When she was 5 months old, her pediatrician referred us to an amazing neurologist due to the increased size of her head. She was diagnosed with external hydrocephalus at 6 months, and had a VP shunt placed in shortly after. At 9 months old after coming down with a high fever and redness at the shunt site, she was taken to the emergency room where we found out she had a infection in the lining of her brain due to her shunt. She was placed on an external shunt and was hospital bound in the pediatric ICU for 4 weeks before receiving a shunt revision. At this point in her life, she had been under sedation over a dozen times before her first birthday. Since then, she has completed various rounds of physical therapy due to the hydrocephalus, as well as other issues in her body such as her uneven pelvis. During one of her most recent physical therapy sessions in the summer of 2014, her physical therapist noticed swelling in her knee. After consulting with Riley's pediatrician, she was sent to an orthopedic specialist to further analyze her situation. After various testing as well as a cortizone injection and aspiration of her knee, Riley was sent to a pediatric rheumatologist and was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis in September 2014. While her knee responded well to a second cortisone injection, we noticed her ankle on the same leg began swelling, which is when her rheumatologist started her on oral meds to help control the problem. She was referred to a pediatric ophthalmologist, since the risk of the arthritis spreading to her eyes was extremely high. Riley was diagnosed with Uveitis in February of 2015, due to the arthritis causing inflammation in the middle layer of her eyes, and is on a steroid drop 4 times a day to control the inflammation to help prevent permanent damage, as well as a second set of eye drops to treat a case of steroid induced glaucoma. Despite all of these obstacles and set backs, Riley Mae has become a smart, strong, courageous, caring, gorgeous 6 year old with no limitations to what she can achieve in her lifetime. So her friends and family would like to purchase an iPad for Riley, so when she is layed up with her various treatments, Riley will have something fun and exciting to do. She can play games, read a book, do homework, or listen to music. Please help us raise money to purchase an iPad for Riley Mae. Thank you
