Rickshaw Run for Cardiac Risk

WHAT, WHY, AND WHO??

WHAT IT IS?

Sam, Alistair, and Bear are driving several hundred miles at over 5500m altitude (18,000 ft for you imperialists) through the Himalayas from Shimla to Leh. This 10 day journey will be completely unsupported, and we'll be camping, cooking, eating a lot of Clif bars, and hopefully befriending locals along the way to make our travels a bit easier. Sounds a little crazy, right? Well, funny thing about crazy is it's just over a fine line from downright stupid.

To cross that line, we've decided to do this entire journey bundled inside a rickshaw. That's right, 3 wheels, one for each dude, powered by a 198cc lawn mower engine is going to be dragging us up, down, and all around these mountains. These are the highest, windiest, and most dangerous roads in the world, and we'll be taking them on in a glorified go-cart. Please don't tell our Mums.

WHY WE'RE DOING IT?

Why not was an adequate enough answer for us ….. However there is some motive behind our madness. We are raising money for two causes we care very much about: cardiac risk awareness and good ol' mother nature.

Anthony Hayes was an incredibly fit, active, and fun loving young man who was a very special person and friend to many. A member of the England Men's Lacrosse team, he inspired those around him in everything he did. Anthony tragically passed away at the age of 26, suddenly and without clear reason after a night playing football with his mates. His death was attributed to an unexplained cardiac arrhythmia. This unexpected loss has taken its toll on many people close to Ant and has had a lasting impact on everyone that knew him.

This challenge is an ideal tribute to our beloved friend Ant, not only because it is ridiculous and wild (much like he was) but we will also be crossing the finish line on the third anniversary of his passing, September 14th. With this adventure, we hope to embrace and remember the wild nature of Ant Hayes, while also raising some funds to support a fantastic organization dedicated to preventing these tragedies in the future.

Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) is an AMAZING organisation that does so much good work. They offer free screenings to 14 - 35 year olds in a bid to catch problems early before they become too late, as well as clinical and emotional support to the families and friends of those affected by these sudden inexplicable deaths. To see some more of their great work and how they help people in these situations please read below.

Secondly, as we pass through some of the most beautiful and epic terrain in the world, consisting of towering mountains and valleys carved by millions of years of glacial activity, it will be hard to ignore the threats to this majestic environment that our day-to-day lives can cause. Along our route, we'll be packing out any trash we find to leave the landscape even more pristine than we found it. We'll be documenting the scenery along the route thanks to @beargoldsteinphotography, which we hope will inspire further appreciation for the environment we inhabit. Finally, a portion of our proceeds will be directed towards Cool Earth, a charity committed to halting deforestation and climate change by empowering local communities.

In just the last 40 years, over half of the world's rainforest has been lost, and yet deforestation continues to happen at a faster rate than ever. Cool Earth works with local people, on the front lines of deforestation, to develop local livelihoods and thus end the cycle of deforestation entrenching these villages into further poverty.  Finally - WHO ARE THESE GUYS??

Sam Russell - fearless leader and initiator of the trip, as well as certified madman. Sam first came to us with the idea, and it's been all downhill in a rickshaw with no brakes since then. Captain of the England Lacrosse team and life-long friend of Ant Hayes, it means a lot to be able to celebrate Ant's life with an adventure akin to his personality. Sam was born and bred in Manchester, UK, where he builds houses by day and enjoys Stella Toppers at the Red Lion Pub by night.

Alistair Berven - having lived in Sam's guestroom and eaten all his food for months while in England last year, Alistair couldn't say no when he got tagged for this adventure by Sam. While he never knew Ant personally, he saw the love shared for him by his fellow England teammates and looks forward to honoring his life while joy-riding a lawnmower around the Himalayas. A native of San Francisco, CA, Alistair now lives on a houseboat and is slightly terrified of the idea of being so far from the ocean.

Sierra Moon "Bear" Goldstein - Yes, that's his real name. A late addition to the trip, Moon leapt at the opportunity to return to his favorite mountain range. If we finish in one piece, he has pledged to name his firstborn "Himalaya". A teammate of Alistair's at Princeton, Moon has the eye of the tiger when it comes to photography, and will be Chief Documentation Officer for the trip, alongside his role of Toilet Paper Treasurer. While originally from Dallas, TX, no one really knows where Moon lives now, and honestly if he'll even join us on this trip. Hope to see you out there, Sierra!
