Darlene & Richard Medical Bills

Donation protected
Richard and Darlene Jones are in dire need of help with medical and and care bills. Lifelong servants to Christ and community, a series of recent medical emergencies have forced them from their home and stripped them from their ability to take care of each other.

Their medical and care facility bills are almost $9,000 a month and have already resulted in more than $60,000 of outstanding bills.

Every month we still have them with us, and receiving care together, is a blessing but also brings another $9,000. It simply can't be maintained.  We can't bear to think of what will happen when the bills can't be paid at all but that is going to happen VERY soon.

Medical Traumas Strike

In August, Richard was feeling some discomfort. Having previously suffered a stroke, he asked his daughter to take him to the doctor. What we thought would be a quick checkup, ended up with him on life support.

He was experiencing acute respiratory failure.

It was discovered that his body was fighting a series of major issues.  Along with advanced COPD, Richard is suffering from Subclavian Steal Syndrome.  A condition which causes blood to flow in the wrong direction.

He was also discovered to have hypercarbic respiratory failure. This causes carbon dioxide to build up in his blood and poison his body.  If he isn't monitored at all times, this could very easily lead to death.

The condition requires him to need the assistance of a Bipap or iron lung to survive. Otherwise, he would need to be on contstant ventelation.

While all of this was happening to Richard, Darlene was already in the midst of her own medical scares. In July, she had  had been admited to hospital and was fighting a life-threatening infection.

Not only was she dealing with her own medical peril but the mental anquish of not being able to be by her husband's side while he was fighting for his life.

It was a blessing that both of them made it through those days.  However, both require assisted living. The only way they could stay together was to leave their home and move into an assisted living medical facility.

Richard's condition is so severe he needs around the clock observation.

Since August he has had three hospital stays - two of them in ICU.

We are grateful for all the care they are receiving but they can't afford it anymore.

About Dr. Darlene & Richard Jones

Darlene and Richard became college sweethearts while both attending Edinboro University.

They have been together ever since.  Graduating as part of the Edinboro Class of 1971.

While attending Edinboro, both Richard and Darlene were involved with the Greek system.  Richard was a founding father of the Theta Chi Alpha fraternity.  Darlene was President of the Edinboro chapter of Gamma Sigma Sigma. Richard was a sweetheart of the sorority.

Family Life

Throughout more than 40 years of marriage, they raised two daughters and now have two grandsons. It would be an understatement to say they were - and remain - excellent parents.

We were truly blessed to be able to take love for granted in our home. That was not by accident. Richard and Darlene are true believers in sharing the love of Christ.

It has been vital to their recovery that they be able to stay together and continue to live as a married couple in their assisted living medical care facility. The mental stress it would cause for that not to be the case would be tragic.

Dr. Darlene Jones - Science Teacher & Pioneer of STEM Education

Dr. Darlene Jones - born Darlene Sarah Parker -grew up as part of a Pennsylvania Dutch family in Muir, Pennsylvania. Graduating from Williams Valley High School in 1968, she was always destine to become a teacher.

Indeed, she was a teacher and educator in the Pennridge School District for more than 35 years. She was Science Department Head and eventually Science Supervisor for the district.

Passionate about science education, she was responsible for running scholastic science fairs. Dr. Jones helped form the Bucks County Science Fair and Delaware Valley Science Fair.  Something which was recognized when the Delaware Valley Science Fair named their Founders Award after her.

She also volunteered, for many years, with the International Science and Engineering Fair.

Over the years, she inspired many students to go to to become world class scientists.

I recently found this photo from a clipping of a 2006 Morning Call newspaper article which shows Mom explaining constellations to a group of young students.  Thousands of kids have had been in similar positions with her before that day.

I know I am biased because I am her daughter but my mother is a pioneer of STEM education. She just didn't think of it like that because she was just doing what she loved to do.

She also worked with the Camden Aquarium in their early stages of development and the Philadelphia Zoo.

Darlene is an alumni of Edinboro University, Lehigh
University and Temple University.

Richard Jones - Man of Faith

Intellectual, chess master, Strat-o-Matic nut - all things that can be used to describe Richard Jones - a 1966 graduate of North Penn High School.

However, none of them mean anything if you don't include Biblical scholar and dedicated servant of God.  A member of  the Schwenkfelder Church, he brings belief into everything he does.

Most recently, even with his own medical issues, he has been putting a great deal of focus on helping to provide those receiving elder care with a sense of dignity and respect.

Richard's condition has recently worsened

Just two weeks ago, he had an extremely serious stay in ICU which included a medically induced coma. We had been told he would not walk or speak again.

This picture is him from just a couple days after that diagnosis.  He has his oxygen tank so he can breathe but he's up walking (slowly) and talking (softly) and playing chess with his eldest grandson.

This is ONLY possible because he is getting the medical care he needs and so is Darlene.

Currently, Richard is back in the hospital after tests revealed dangerously high carbon blood levels.

He can't leave until he has the proper breathing device that will allow him to return to the rehabilitation center inside the assisted living center where he resides with Darlene.

Help us keep them together!

The stark truth is though that this costs $9,000 a month. They already have $60,000 in medical bills. We just don't know how we can manage  to keep them together and getting the care they require.

The only way that will be possible is if we are able to ask for the generosity of community spirit.  Please donate what you can.

Everything we collect will go to pay for their medical bills and long term care.
