Reunite Grandma & Granddaughter

Donation protected
Two years ago, a distracted driver killed my Uncle. Unfortunately, my Uncle was my Grandmother’s primary caregiver. She is eighty-six, has cognitive issues and an aortic aneurysm. Her aneurysm is inoperable due to her age and its location and size. She needs to have someone who can visit every day to be sure she is eating, taking her medication and not spending too much time alone.

The summer I turned twelve, I moved in with my Grandma and my Mom. My mom was a long-haul truck driver, so the day-to-day work of taking care of me fell to my Grandma. She put up with my teenage angst and helped me navigate medical appointments to treat my Cerebral Palsy. When she should have been enjoying retirement, she was raising me. The strong woman I am today is because she taught me how to stand up for myself and what made me happy. She was always there for me when I needed her. Now, it’s my turn to be there for her.

Unfortunately, my mother passed away in 2007, and with my Uncle now gone, there is no one else who can commit the time to her that she deserves. I want desperately to do that for her, but she is in Edmonton and I am in Calgary. Worse, I am on permanent disability and my budget is stretched so thin you can see daylight through it.

As much as I try not to think about it, my Grandma doesn’t have as much time left as I would like. I want to make sure the time she has left is spent with people who love her and have the time and energy to make sure she is well taken care of. Currently, she spends much of her time home alone, as she isn’t well enough to go far, and I can’t afford to visit often. She cannot drive anymore, and must use a walker. We have not been able to find a way to reliably get her groceries and her eyesight is not good so simple daily tasks are difficult.

If we wait for her to save up on her own with a meagre old age pension income, it could be months -  or even years - before she can move. Please help me move her to Calgary so that she can be close by and I can visit as often as we both want. We have a whole list of things we want to do together once she is here.

Below is a breakdown of the costs we are asking for help covering:

$1000 – Moving Costs – U-Haul rental, insurance and gas for an appropriate sized truck
$1000 – First month’s rent
$500 – Security deposit
$300 – Pet fee
$2000 – 2 months’ rent to give us time to apply for rental supplement to make her rent more affordable
$ 384 – Covers the costs charged by GoFundMe and the payment affiliates

If you can donate financially, that’s great. Thank you so much from the very bottom of our hearts. We are so grateful. If you can’t contribute funds, you can still help. Please share this campaign on all your social media. If you’ve already shared it…share it again.

Also, if you are in Edmonton or Calgary and can help with physically moving Grandma and her things once we raise the funds, please contact me. I am great at organizing, but I cannot physically schlepp boxes.

Thank you.
