Restore Little Cottonwood Canyon!

Help fund the Little Cottonwood Creek Trail Rehabilitation Project!

Little Cottonwood Canyon (LCC) is one of Salt Lake City's drinking water sources. Additionally, it is a center for outdoor recreation, from hiking to mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding, climbing, and photography. We owe it to the Salt Lake Community and outdoor enthusiasts alike to ensure LCC remains healthy for generations to come.

At the bottom of LCC lies the Temple Quarry Trail, a multi-use trail gently trending up the canyon along Little Cottonwood Creek. As a heavily visited area, the lower reaches of this trail often succumb to litter, graffiti, and illegal camping. Just north of the Wasatch Resort, an old historic pavilion became the focus for these illicit activities and was an eyesore (and likely a pollution source) in the canyon.

Last fall, through collaborative efforts of  the US Forest Service, Cottonwood Hydro, Snowbird, the Salt Lake Climbers Alliance, and the Cottonwood Canyons Foundation, the pavilion was demolished as the first installment of  a restoration project intended to improve the area for wildlife, recreators, and Salt Lake City residents alike.

While the pavilion no longer stands as a beacon for illicit activities, this cherished area is still at risk of destruction, and WE NEED YOUR HELP.

Individuals destroying and disturbing the beauty of the area easily access this section of the Temple Quarry Trail via a water pipe that crosses the creek just adjacent to the pavilion site. Crossing at this point over freezing, rushing water is not only unsafe, but illegal. We believe if we block off access to this pipe, we will reduce the amount of illicit activity in these areas. However, we do not have the funds to support the construction of fences across both entry points. We ask for the financial support of the community who care about improving the ecological health and appearance of this area.

The next phase in this project is to revegetate the area with native trees, shrubs, and forbs and restore ecological function. On June 16th, 2018, the Cottonwood Canyons Foundation will host a volunteer restoration day to plant native species, install fencing to protect these growing plants, collect and dispose of litter, and remove graffiti. While reduced access to this area (via pipe protection) should attenuate the amount of illicit activity (e.g. graffiti, natural resource damage, etc.) at the pavilion site, the costs associated with revegetation, fence installation, and removal of present graffiti is more than we can afford. Will you help us to purchase plants, tools, fencing, and environmentally-friendly graffiti removal materials to restore this area back to its natural vitality?

We aim to raise $25,000 to support the second installment of this Little Cottonwood Canyon Improvement Project.  We have received letters of written support from the Salt Lake Ranger District, the Salt Lake Climbers Alliance, Alta Ski Area, the Granite Community Council, Solitude Mountain Resort, the Unified Police of Greater Salt Lake, and the Office of Outdoor Recreation.

The breakdown of the budget is as follows:

$13,500.00 for plants, fencing, tools, graffiti removal, and safety gear

$6,000 for the pipeline gates--materials, installation, and weatherproofing

$500 for volunteer food and drink

$5,000.00 for personnel expenses

Your contribution, big or small, means the world to us and the canyons. It means reduced criminal activity in the canyons, so the Salt Lake Community can recreate safely. It means improved habitat for birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, and the wide diversity of plants that call the canyon home. It means an improved watershed that provides drinking water to thousands of families in the Salt Lake Valley.

Thank you, from all of us at the Cottonwood Canyons Foundation, for your generosity and understanding of the value of this area.
