Early in November this kitten was spotted in our neighborhood with siblings. Last weekend we found it alone eating old birdseed off the ground in our yard. We were able to get close enough to give it food and water. We had to back away before it would eat and the poor thing was so hungry that it started choking a little as it ate becasue it was eating so quickly.
After a week of watching for it and feeding it kitten food when we could find it, we were finally able to trap it and take it to the veterinarian for care. The vet announced it was a girl about 8 weeks old. The poor little girl is being treated for fleas and is still at the vet to check for intestinal parasites. She also had to be tested for feline AIDS and Leukemia (she has been cleared on both of those!).
At least half of what we are asking for will be paid to the vet tomorrow (12-2-17) when we pick her up. We have not seen the full bill yet but know the initial cost will be about $250. She is still too young for some vaccinations which will be needed a little later. She will also need to be spayed when she is old enough. For the next three weeks she will have to be separated from our other pets until she is cleared of all parasites. This will require a new litter box and food dishes.
The hardest part about rescuing animals is the cost involved. With local shelters cramped for space we couldn't find one willing to take a feral kitten. We did not plan for this especially during the holidays but we could not allow this little cat to starve in our backyard. That would be unthinkable for us.
All funds will be used for her veterinary expenses and care. Any remaining funds will be donated to a local animal shelter.
