Car repair and fix power steering

Want to help a friend fix his car. He got in a wreck last year because the electric power steering went out on his fusion. Unfortunately his insurance had got cancelled and he didn't know. There was a recall on the power steering but not for the year his car is, so unfortunately Ford won't pay for the damage and he has to come up with the money and will try to fix himself with the help of ppl he knows who works on cars. With the situation he's in right now,  he's having trouble coming up with the money.  
There's a couple thousand dollars in damage,  and the power steering is another couple thousand dollars to fix too.
