AlyssaSialaris Memorial Scholarship

$46,639 of $50,000 goal

Raised by 194 people in 37 months

The purpose of this fund is to reach $50,000 by April 2018 to create the Alyssa Sialaris Whittier College Endowment Fund.  (In the past 4 years we've privately raised nearly $25K)  We would like to make something positive come out of the tragedy of losing our daughter.  By reaching this $50K base goal, we will forever keep Alyssa's memory alive while providing a  yearly scholarship  for other like-minded  student-athletes' educations
Five weeks before her graduation, on April 3, 2013, our beautiful daughter and sister tragically passed away of natural causes at the young age of 21.
Alyssa was an amazing dual sport scholar-athlete majoring in kinesiology/nutrition sciences.  She fell in love with "Everything Whittier" and had extremely special bonds with her professors, coaches, friends and teamsmates. They've shared with us many stories of what an inspiring, passionate, funny person Lyss was.            She was an active member of the community, and was proud of her work at a local elementary school where she volunteered over 200 hours running a PE program and working with children in a second language reading program.
When Whittier College and Alyssa's coaches suggested  creating this fund, we immediately knew this was the perfect way to honor her memory.  We know her experience at Whittier was deeply meaningful to her.  She would be thrilled to know that through her passing she is still able to be a source of support, inspiration and hope for other student-athletes.

Dear family and friends,
WE HAVE AMAZINGLY WONDERFUL NEWS TO SHARE. MIRACLES DO HAPPEN, AND A MIRACLE HAS HAPPENED FOR US!! THE HUGE GAP IS NO LONGER SO HUGE. WE ARE SO, SO CLOSE ! ! ! !

From the generosity of all of you, as well as our personal lump-sum contribution, we had made a huge dent in the $50K base fund necessary to create Alyssa’s fund. But as we were closing in on the five-year mark, we still had about half of that amount to raise, and we had no idea of how we were going to do it, let alone do it by the end of April 2018. Then in March, (some might say “in the last hour”) we received news from Whittier College that a class of ‘62 alumna made a very generous donation directly to the school for Alyssa’s fund, closing in on that big gap. ( Check out http://c-fund.us/ecl , a crowd-funding page Whittier created specifically for Alyssa’s fund, which combines this donation & our GoFundMe$ as one total. )

We met “Lynn” at a Whittier dinner in the fall of ’17. Since then, we’ve learned that she was very touched by Alyssa’s story. Being a scholarship recipient herself, she felt very passionate about the way we chose to memorialize Alyssa, and she wanted to be a part of fulfilling our vision to help future Whittier students, through the aid of a partial scholarship.

Of course, along with this wonderful news is also the sad reality that we lost Lyss. Our lives haven’t been the same since the passing of our beautiful daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, friend, girlfriend, teammate, classmate, coach, mentor, inspirer and jokester.

April 3, 2013… that night is so vivid in our minds. We miss Alyssa every day. We think about her every day. We find ourselves trying to imagine what she would be doing now. We try to imagine what she is doing now. We’re certain she is living life “there” just as she lived life “here”…with a happy, funny, crazy, loving spirit. We are so lucky that she was our girl! She taught us so much in such a short amount of time on Earth. Our lives are richer having had her in it.

As we told all of you from the very beginning of our fundraising, remembering Alyssa in April 2018 will be the last time we reach out to all of you for help. And guys, we are so close to bringing this fund to fruition!!

We are in awe at the realization of just how far Alyssa’s fund has progressed over this short time. We know all of you have been so generous with your support, love and donations, and no words can properly thank you. We are very optimistic that this fall, 2018, the first recipients will be awarded the Alyssa Sialaris ’13 Endowment Fund scholarship! It brings us great joy knowing something bright WILL come from the darkness of losing our girl!

Thank you everyone!! We love you, and we appreciate you beyond words! With much gratitude today and always,
Gus, Sandy, Nicole & Dina

Anyone who would like to make a final donation to help us tighten the final gap, may do so in two ways; 1) Directly to Whittier at http://c-fund.us/ecl (which is fee free for both you & us) Or 2) through this GoFundMe page (which withholds 8% of your donation for their fee.)

Hey Everyone,
Today is Alyssa's 26th birthday!!! Please join us in celebrating our crazy, adventurous, fun-loving beautiful girl by taking a moment to hold this beautiful soul in your thoughts and sending a little love to her in the heavens.

In our usual fashion, on this special day we are sharing her GFM page in hopes that it will inspire you to remember and celebrate Lyss by making a donation to her scholarship fund and by sharing it with everyone in your lives. Please help us make this birthday present her biggest yet!! (Hey, just realized, she's 26, and we're just shy of $26K!)

We're nearing the end of our campaign, as April 3 will be Alyssa's 5 year anniversary. Our mission has been to raise the $50K base fund. Rest assured, your donations to help us get as close as possible to that number MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE, and the Alyssa Sialaris 2013 Endowment Fund WILL BE ESTABLISHED in 2018!!

With much love, thanks, and appreciation,
Alyssa's family <3

It's been four years now, and we miss our girl with every fiber of our being. However, the love we feel from so many wonderful people, for us and for Alyssa, fills our hearts with great happiness and joy, and this helps heal our hearts more than anyone can imagine. As with any parent who's lost a child, we never want our girl to be forgotten. With every donation made to Alyssa's endowment fund, it is clear that so, so many people share a common goal... to keep Alyssa's legacy and memory alive! Through this college scholarship, Alyssa's name will carry on at Whittier College, indefinitely. Thank you all who have helped get us to the half-way point of our $50K. Please consider making a donation to our cause in honor of the 4 year anniversary of her passing, and remember to share Alyssa's page often to help us spread the word and raise awareness. We truly are thankful to all of you Alyssa supporters!
