Luz Gonzalez was walking near her home in Brooklyn when she was killed by a careless driver. Her death tore a hole in the heart of her close-knit family, and in the hearts of those of us who love that family.

The grief the Gonzalez family is facing is unimaginable. We are raising money to help them have one less thing to worry about as they attempt to recover, to get their beloved girl to the family home in Mexico for burial, to stabilize their lives.

The money we raise will go directly to the Gonzalez family, whom we have known for a decade. I will personally withdraw the funds and deliver them directly to Jesus Gonzalez, Luz's uncle, as he requests.

Thank you all for your support and generosity and messages of love and consolation. It has been the brightest spot in a grim time to see the love and support rally around the Gonzalezes over the past week.

I was able to take the first installment of money to Luz's uncle, Jesus, yesterday, and we sat for a while in his kitchen talking. Behind him, a pallet of water bottles sat next to the fridge. “What’s all the water for?” I asked.

“Oh--well, so many people come to the rallies, and it’s very hot. So we take water for them to drink.”
When he left work today, he took three giant bags of ice with him to help cool down the water--even in his grief, thinking of others.

Every now and the I could hear his children playing in the room next to us. His daughter and son—Luz’s cousins—poked their heads out to say hello.

“How are they taking it?” I asked

“It’s confusing. They ask when they can see their cousin. I tell them that God took her to be with him, but they don’t understand. They ask when he’s going to let her come back.”

Even as the initial upswell of grief settles, the campaign to get justice for Luz will not end. Please continue to spread the word, fight for safer streets, stand up for the human rights of our neighbors and friends.

With love and gratitude,
George

[A note on these GoFundMe accounts: There are, as far as I know, three GoFundMe accounts that have been set up by friends of the family. The family knows about all three of them. This is one, and these are the other two:

I can't speak to the veracity of any other accounts, but the funds from these three are all going directly to the family.]

Thank you all for your support of the Gonzalez family. Last night, we attended a powerful rally in honor of Luz. Her family was there, along with the Brooklyn Borough President and representatives from local and federal government--all there to celebrate Luz's life, to comfort her family, and to call for safer streets. There will be rallies every night this week at 5:00 at the corner of Wyckoff and Hart to continue the calls for justice, so if you want to support the family in person, you can attend and help that way.

The funds that we raise will be given directly to the Gonzalez family. Luz's uncle, Jesus, has worked with us for 10 years. We will withdraw funds on his behalf and at his request and give them directly to him to distribute to the family.
