Hurricane Relief for Ile-a-Vache
As you may know by now, Hurricane Matthew blew over the southwestern peninsula of Haiti early Tuesday with devastating 145-miles-per-hour winds, flooding coastal towns and ripping roofs off buildings.
The poorest country in Latin America is ill-prepared to withstand the hurricane force winds and massive storm surge. The impact was worst in the rural south-west of Haiti where crops were wiped out including some of the island's best coffee plantations. Haiti's impoverished government has one of the hemisphere's least equipped civil protection and disaster management services, with woefully few hurricanes shelters.
The eye of Matthew passed only 35 miles west of Ile-a-Vache where local residents took refuge in churches and schools, including Ecole du Village, the school that Flying High for Haiti sponsors. Early reports indicate that many homes were damaged and lost roofs, according to the island's mayor, Jean-Yvres Amazan. Like many residents, our school principal, Joline, was forced to evacuate her home due to flooding.
Please help us raise funds in order to purchase the most needed items to send to Ile-a-Vache. Our goal is to help rebuild the community.
We are working on delivering 3,000 food kits to the island with the help of other organizations, but transportation is a problem as the main road to the southwest has been washed away. We are looking for possible plane to take the supplies from Port au Prince to our administrator in Les Cayes who also lost his house on Ile-a-Vache.
Please continue your prayers for all those in Haiti. We will post more information on the website as it becomes available including photos taken by our students.
Thank you for your support!
Flying High for Haiti
We are in a time of giving and thinking of those less fortunate than us, those who will be spending the holidays roofless or living in very precarious conditions. So, please help FHFH reach or surpass its goal so during this holiday season we can rebuild more homes in Ile-a-Vache.
Happy Holidays and my very best wishes for 2017.
