Hurricane Relief for Ile-a-Vache

$26,678 of $30k goal

Raised by 229 people in 5 months

As you may know by now, Hurricane Matthew blew over the southwestern peninsula of Haiti early Tuesday with devastating 145-miles-per-hour winds, flooding coastal towns and ripping roofs off buildings.

The poorest country in Latin America is ill-prepared to withstand the hurricane force winds and massive storm surge. The impact was worst in the rural south-west of Haiti where crops were wiped out including some of the island's best coffee plantations. Haiti's impoverished government has one of the hemisphere's least equipped civil protection and disaster management services, with woefully few hurricanes shelters.

The eye of Matthew passed only 35 miles west of Ile-a-Vache where local residents took refuge in churches and schools, including Ecole du Village, the school that Flying High for Haiti sponsors. Early reports indicate that many homes were damaged and lost roofs, according to the island's mayor, Jean-Yvres Amazan. Like many residents, our school principal, Joline, was forced to evacuate her home due to flooding.

Please help us raise funds in order to purchase the most needed items to send to Ile-a-Vache. Our goal is to help rebuild the community.
We are working on delivering 3,000 food kits to the island with the help of other organizations, but transportation is a problem as the main road to the southwest has been washed away.  We are looking for possible plane to take the supplies from Port au Prince to our administrator in Les Cayes who also lost his house on Ile-a-Vache.
Please continue your prayers for all those in Haiti. We will post more information on the website as it becomes available including photos taken by our students.

Thank you for your support!

During Thanksgiving break I witnessed the great efforts of the people of Ile-a-Vache to rebuild and roof their homes after Hurricane Matthew. We visited the houses that FHFH had helped in the area of Canobert where the school is located and I was very happy to see that many homes that needed roofing had already been fixed. We also visited the homes that FHFH is rebuilding from scratch such as the house of Osevio, an 85 year old man, who was very grateful as his three bedroom home is almost finished. I also visited Odette, who is 70 and lives with her daughter and grandchildren in a house on top of the hill where the winds blew hardest and her home was totally destroyed along with all her possessions. Now thanks to your donations she will be able to have a new house for her and all her family. But a lot more needs to be done. FHFH volunteers accompanied Mayor Amazon of Ile-a-Vache on a tour of areas where help is badly needed. We visited a home where a family of six were living under a collapsed tin roof as it was all that was left of their home.
We are in a time of giving and thinking of those less fortunate than us, those who will be spending the holidays roofless or living in very precarious conditions. So, please help FHFH reach or surpass its goal so during this holiday season we can rebuild more homes in Ile-a-Vache.

Happy Holidays and my very best wishes for 2017.

I just came back from a visit to Ile-a-Vache, Haiti to assess the destruction of homes due to Hurricane Matthew. Flying High has partnered with EDEM foundation to start the immediate roofing and rebuilding of damaged homes on the island. I was very happy to witness the restart of classes at our school, Ecole du Village. Many students were no-shows as their families are still struggling to put their lives in order. Many families are sleeping out in the open with their few belongings. We visited many of them to offer our support, including solar lamps, and they remain remarkably resilient.
Our main objective is to get the kids back in school as soon as possible and put a roof over their heads. We are confident that with your generous donations this can be done in only a matter of a few weeks.
I would like to thank the great team that accompanied me: photographer Jason Henry and videographer Michael Atwood for all their hard work and their valuable support to Flying High.

The picture of the school is heartbreaking. I'm so glad the solar lights will help some of those affected. We will be keeping all the Haitians and you in our prayers.
