Refugee Family Lost All In Fire

$10,095 of $5,000 goal

Raised by 212 people in 15 months
Created July 24, 2017

A refugee family of nine lost everything in a fire in their apartment complex early Sunday morning. The tragic fire killed two neighbors and forced the family to flee in their bare feet and pajamas. The fire started next door but spread into their unit.

They lost everything -- shoes, clothes, furniture, dishes, family pictures... everything in the home they have worked so hard to make for themselves since arriving in this country. While they are still shaken by the horrible tragedy, they are thankful to be alive. This fund raiser will help them buy new clothes, shoes, and furniture, and help them pay security deposit and move-in costs at a new apartment.

I am a close family friend who has known the family for several years. I am helping them with this fund raiser with their knowledge and consent. 100% of funds raised will be given to the family to help them start over again. Please give what you can to help this wonderful family in a time of need.

Hello everyone,

Thank you so much for all of your kind comments, shares, and support. I wanted to give everyone an update on how things are progressing. As you can see, we have passed our goal by almost $4,000 dollars, which is an incredible statement of generosity and good will on your part.

The family have been actively looking for a new home. They have an appointment to visit a potential property today. Portland is in the midst of an extreme housing crisis, so finding a new home has been challenging, but the family are optimistic about finding something soon and are very thankful for all of the gracious support they have received.

I have chosen not to read the comment sections on some of the postings of this link and will not be sharing any of that unkind vitriol with the family. We are focused on the hundreds of kind neighbors and community members who have shared this link, left kind comments, and donated what they could to help out a family in need. Thank you to all of you for your kindness.

Thank you everyone for your support for this family. You have raised over $8,000 to help them rebuild their lives.
Thank you to everyone who has given, shared, or spread the word, to the folks in the local media who featured the link, and to everyone who has offered so many other forms of kindness.

Dad has returned from Alaska, and we are going to look at a rental today. Hopefully we will have the family moved in soon and can begin replacing all of the items lost in the fire. Wish us luck!

Hi everyone,

Thank you!

Through your kindness and generosity, we have already raised more than $3,000 dollars to help this family start over. I just left the hotel room where they are staying, eight of them sharing two queen-sized beds. They have diapers, formula, food, coloring books, and each other.

They had a big lunch today and are feeling a bit better than yesterday, though the stress of their situation is not leaving much space to process all of what has happened in the last few days. We are working together to find a new home and will be updating as things develop. Portland is in the middle of a terrible housing crisis, and both the cost of the living and the available rental inventories are major hurdles in this process.

Thank you to all of you who have donated and who have shared this link. I have told the family about all of their friends near and far who care about them and who have their back. They are very grateful.

Go Fund Me emailed me asking to assure you that I will be setting up the transfer of funds from Go Fund Me directly into the family's bank account. I want to assure you that 100% of all moneys raised will go to the family directly through a wire transfer. I am only facilitating the communications for this campaign.

Thank you!
