This GoFundMe page is dedicated to supporting the First Baptist Church in the aftermath of the fire. Jean McBain, the church’s treasurer will be handling the withdrawal of the funds. There are current necessary expenses of debris removal and fence rental, etc which the funds may help alleviate. The church will consider all options for the future building through God’s guidance.

As many have heard, a beloved Wakefield landmark was struck by lightning Tuesday night. Not only is this an historic building and a beautiful part of our town’s charm, but this has been a place of worship for more than 100 years. As the former pastor’s daughter and having grown up running through the halls, discovering secret hiding spots in the church, it breaks my heart that what I’ve considered a second home has burned down in the blink of an eye. But having been raised in the First Baptist Church Of Wakefield, Massachusetts, I have also been taught that:

“The church is not a building;
the church is not a steeple;
the church is not a resting place;
the church is a people.

I am the church! You are the church!
We are the church together!
All who follow Jesus,
all around the world!
Yes, we're the church together!“

Yes, the former “Tall Spire” building is a skeleton of what it once was, but the church is still alive and working in our community. The building itself has also been home to the Tall Spire nursery school as well as host to other various groups over the years. Please support our church as we continue to worship, teach, learn, serve, love, and grow in our community. Please join our church family in our mission to bring God’s light to the world around us. Thank you for your love and support and may God bless each and every one of you.

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.”  1 Peter 4:8

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

I hope everyone’s been having a wonderful New Year so far!
The process of debris removal from the church has been underway and we have been fortunate enough to discover some priceless artifacts and documents from the historic vault. Unfortunately, there is a large amount of water and mold damage to many of the documents we have, including files dating back to the late 1700’s. As we would love to restore all of our historical documents, it has become clear that this is financially not possible at this time and we are prioritizing what will be restored at an archival level versus what will be done at a lower level of restoration, both being very costly.
Please help us in preserving the history of not only our church, but of the town of Wakefield.

We could still use everyone’s help in raising money to help move forward after the fire. As the pieces of the building lay where once stood a magnificent building, paperwork is being filed, photos are being scrutinized, and the insurance company is trying to determine everything that was inside that was consumed by the fire. The church members are continuing to seek God’s guidance in the steps that follow.
For all that worshiped here it will be bittersweet this Christmas. We won’t be able to walk into the beautifully decorated sanctuary filled with poinsettias and Christmas bows and many years of memories, dimming the lights as we sing Silent Night by candlelight. But we will remember the reason we are here isn’t for all the holly and Christmas trees, but to worship the one who came many years ago so humbly laid in a feeding trough to save us all from our sins. He’s the one who continues to walk with us daily, through our good days as well as the days we don’t act as Christians should. He’s the one who wants only the best for all of us. He’s the one who brings peace and true joy. Although we will miss the building, we need to remind ourselves that it is merely a place to worship, not a thing to worship. God is with us as we continue our journey as a church, and let us make Him the chief cornerstone of whichever building we will be worshiping from. Please know that any donations you make will help as we continue to do God’s work here at First Baptist Wakefield.

Another huge thank you for all of the support we’ve received from everyone who’s donated financially, shared kind words, said prayers for the congregation, offered expert advice, provided a temporary place to worship, etc. We’re just shy of $20,000 being donated! The church council has been meeting to begin discussions on future plans for the congregation and it looks like there’s a long process ahead of us. As anxious as everyone is to know what’s in store for the site of the former building, please be patient with us as we pray for God’s guidance in considering all of the options open to us in this new chapter we’re entering into.
May God bless you all this holiday season as you take the time to remember the true reason we celebrate. I pray you take a break from the hustle and bustle of your daily routines to slow down and try to be a little more patient and kind to one another. Take the extra minute to help the stranger in need, let someone else have the parking spot, run ahead to open the door for the people in front of you, give someone a smile. It doesn’t take much to show love to a neighbor and bring God’s light to those around you.

Matthew 22:37-40

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
