Flying into 2023

JUST SAY YES! — #FlyingInto2023

As this year comes to a close, Fly-by-Night Dance is focusing on ascending the funding ladder to get us back onstage while expanding our workshop offerings. Artist-led Aerial Dance organizations such as Fly-by-Night Dance rely on donations from individuals like yourself to help them thrive; this dance genre does not fit neatly into dance grant categories.

What does Fly-by-Night Dance do?

CREATE & PRESENT INNOVATIVE & EXPRESSIVE AERIAL DANCE
We expand the movement vocabulary and thematic content for Aerial Dance through our repertory shows and Aerial Dance Festivals.
Say YES! to creative ideas that fly through the air.

OFFER FREE WORKSHOPS
We offer free Somatic Aerial Dance workshops for BIPOC and LGBTQ communities and workshops on Cultivating Joy for seniors.
Say YES! to expanding our community every year.

OFFER SLIDING SCALE FEES FOR ONGOING CLASSES
We rely on class fees to cover our studio and liability costs, but we never shut the door on students who can’t afford those fees. Individual donations help us cover the costs of these classes.
Say YES! to everyone who wants to join a class.

KEEP TICKET PRICES AT REASONABLE LEVELS
Donations allow us to offer reasonably priced tickets, such as discounts for students and seniors.
Say YES! to arts for all ages.

What critics have said about the work:

Aerial dance choreographer Julie Ludwick should be enjoying greater notoriety than she currently garners in the contemporary dance world. The history books will surely recognize her as an exceptional artist who has taken modern dance to new places (literally) and mined its expressive potential in a truly original fashion. As the artistic director of Fly-by-Night Dance Theater, Ludwick has developed a movement language that extends the spatial and kinetic possibilities of modern dance by blending it with low-flying trapeze work, yet with no evocation of circus-trick sensibilities. — Lisa Jo Sagolla, Backstage

Fly-by-Night Dance Theater can’t promise that you’ll sprout wings by the end of their Aerial Dance Bootcamp. But they can teach you basic trapeze skills, tension-releasing techniques, and strength-building moves that will benefit even your earthbound dancing. — Dance Magazine

The trapeze work is exhilarating, but it’s not the stuff you’d see in the Big Top. The lower trapeze bar hangs five to six feet off the ground, and the emphasis here is on artistry — not circus tricks. Ludwick’s style is based in Skinner Releasing Technique, which uses imagery to ease tension and free the body for creative impulses – very helpful when it comes to responding to the mercurial movements of a trapeze. — Flavorwire
