Reunite LGBT Refugee Family

$3,755 of $3,500 goal

Raised by 43 people in 16 months
Could you imagine being separated from your baby for two years, uncertain if you will ever see him or her again? For one refugee family who has endured far more than they should have, this is has been every day for them, not knowing if they will see their young son again. However, you can help us make a difference in this family’s life immediately. In the spirit of the holiday season and as concerned global citizens, please consider giving the most precious gift of reuniting a family with their child.

My name is Shyra and together with Indira Ghale, I run a women’s shelter for survivors of (sexual) violence, survivors of human trafficking, and women and girls that need a safe space before they return to society.

Two years ago, two young women, who are of a sexual minority from a Muslim country, had to flee their home because of societal discrimination against their sexual orientation and relationship with each other. Because one of the women escaped from an arranged marriage, her family now wants to kill her to save the honour of the family, which is an awful reality in the country they are from. For this reason we cannot identify them until they are completely safe.

In their harrowing escape from the family, they were forced to stay in many places before realizing that their country of origin was no longer safe for them. They fled to Nepal but they had to leave behind their newborn child, who had no birth certificate and papers and could not join them.

Together with a few well-wishers that wish to remain anonymous, we have supported the two young ladies, with housing, medical attention, and their successful application for emigration to Canada. Initiatives from across the globe have been involved, and we are filled with joy that they have finally managed to get a new chance and start their lives in a new and safe location.

However, their two-year old child who has been in the care of a friend, has not been able to join them so far. A medical clearance, maternity testing, transportation to the main city (from the rural area where he is currently cared for), as well as lodging are needed to secure a passport for the child, and then help him join his family. Because the child is so young, and the parents cannot re-enter their country to bring him to Canada themselves, a guardian must fly with him to their new home. The costs are estimated to be 3000 Euros, and this is the only thing that stands in the way of reuniting this young family.

Neil Horning and his wife Sonam Shah are accepting international contributions on our behalf, 100% of which will be sent from the US to us in Nepal via wire transfer to help this refugee couple. Neil has been a friend of ours for years and his been following this case since the beginning.

Once the couple are safe and sound, reunited with their son, we will be able to update the contributors to this campaign on their status.

Hi All,

I just wanted to share a quick update on the refugee couple I've received from Shyra and Indira, with their permission. The couple are both doing well in Canada and have jobs. One of them has started to play football/Soccer again on a regular basis, which has been a great source of enjoyment for her.

However, their plan to reunite with their child has suffered a delay. Pakistan, which I can now reveal is the country the couple is from, is requiring that the parents be present in order to make travel documents for the child, which of course is a challenge if the parents are refugees and cannot travel to the country, and likely compounded by their status as LGBT women.

While this is an unexpected issue, there is no "ask" at this point for further assistance. A lawyer is being consulted, and I will continue to keep you all updated when I hear anything further.

Good news everyone!

I have an update from Indira, that should be worth taking the 2 minutes to watch. Please take a look!

We still weren't able to show the LBGT couple's faces, as they are worried about retaliation from family members in their country of origin. But we have it on good authority that they are doing well, and very thankful for the help everyone has provided.

As you can see, this campaign has been a team effort from a number of unsung hero's, including but certainly not limited to everyone who contributed monetarily. We've reached a closing point here, but I think I'll keep it open for a while so we can update you on on any more good news.

Thanks once again everybody!

Wow! With a generous anonymous contribution this morning, and then an even more generous donation at our rescuer level, our campaign has come to a sudden and dramatic conclusion. We have exceeded our goal of $3500 by 4% with a total of $3,655!

I also received some good news on the status of the LBGT family from Indira this morning. But, if possible I'll let her put it in her own words.

We did not plan to take the approach of adding stretch goals to this campaign. The goal was the goal... and quite frankly, I didn't think we'd have to plan how to handle the end right now! The extra 4% we're over the goal should cover any fees from the platform and the wire transfer perfectly. So, I'll just make clear now that any further contributions that come in before this family are reunited will be going to Indira's organization to help others in Nepal.

Thank you again everybody! This has been a great experience. You should be hearing more from us about the impact of your generosity shortly.

Today we had 4 contributions come in from out of the blue. Thanks so much!

We're now at $2,405, or roughly 69% of our goal. I hope to post an update from Indira on the status of the case as soon as I get it, which will hopefully carry us through the home stretch.

Have a great day everyone!
