r&d vinyl is a record store we're opening in philadelphia on april 16. over the past six years the four of us have been deeply engaged in the local landscape of music in philadelphia. it's become very important to all of us to support both local and touring artists in any way - whether it's going to a show and buying a shirt and a record or throwing a show and providing a couch to sleep on. we feel that it's time there's a store that represents so much of the incredible music we've come to appreciate that doesn't find its way into most record stores.
in addition to direct purchasing from independent artists, we've established relationships with incredible distributors like Redeye, Forced Exposure, Secretly Canadian, Scorpio, Light in the Attic, and Midheaven, as well as labels like Dull Tools, Flenser, Wharf Cat, Subpop, Matador, Dischord, Feeding Tube, 4AD, Captured Tracks, DFA, Dirtnap Records, Stones Throw, Hyperdub, Rough Trade, Warp, Thrill Jockey, Touch and Go, Suicide Squeeze, Ranch, Ramp Local, Single Girl Married Girl, OSR Tapes, NNA Tapes, Northern Spy, Mexican Summer, Katorga Works, Holy Mountain, Hanson, Exploding in Sound, Drag City, Mississippi Records, Kill Rock Stars and many, many more.
we are extremely psyched about the overwhelming interest and excitement for this idea from the friends we've shared it with so far. it's very rewarding and gratifying to be seeing our enthusiasm reciprocated - and by such industrious and genuine people. we really can't wait to see all you.
there are so many expenses in starting a business like this and we've been doing a good job of making it the store we envision while keeping it within the bounds of our tight, out-of-pocket, budget. but as these costs are adding up, both from the capital of purchasing and providing so many new records for sale as well other costs like licensing and registration with the city, customized shelving, rent and insurance for the storefront, vendor fees, a sound system for the store and much more, we realize there's many areas we can improve.
your contribution will allow for us to make upgrades to these aspects and afford us the opportunity for further expansion sooner than we thought possible. based on our current financial realities, our inventory consists only of records we consider “essential”. with your help, we hope to expand our opening-day inventory in all directions so that when you find yourself in the store, we will not only have what you've been looking for, but something you didn't even know you've been looking for all along.
