RAW DEAL FOR CARLO
In between comedy gigs I sometimes take on acting roles. I joined a group on Facebook that posts casting calls. So I saw a post for a movie called Vendetta Games looking for henchman type bodyguards for a drug dealer. So I submitted for the role and got casted. I was to report to the set in Woodbridge N.J it was a small independant film produced by a college student. There was no pay but I was to receive a copy of the film & credit on IMDB... So the scene called for me and another guy to be in a simulated car chase scene and I was to be shooting at the car in front of me. So we filmed the scene in a residential area of Woodbridge, and as soon as we returned from the shooting the scene , the set was surrrounded by police cars. Apparently residents in the neighborhood phoned the police and told them that there was a two guys driving around waving a gun out of the window. Now I understand that residents did not realize we were shooting a movie and understand why the police were called, and I cannot fault the cops either due to the fact that they are getting a call and have no idea what the situaution is.
When the police arrived we attempted to explain to them that this is a movie shoot, and that the gun was a prop. After several minutes of questioning everyone the police had determined that the producer & director neither had a film permit nor did they have a permit for the prop gun which turned out to be an air soft pellet pistol. I was the only one arrested that day for possesion of a handgun, and now face up to 5 years of prison,. I spent 4 days in jail at Middlesex County Jail until my family was able to post bond for me. The producer of the movie told my family that he would indeed bail me out but when he found out the bail was 10,000 he declined to help and left me there and left my family frantic as to how to arrange bail and get me released. He ignored my family's phone calls & subsequently my family had to lay out over 4,500 thus far for the bail bondsman and other expenses.
So I am humbly asking that anyone who is in the entertainment industry, to please contribute as little as $1... I understand that this time is tough for everyone financially. But if you are unable to donate, please consider sharing it with others who you may feel can help, so i can accquire the necessary money to retain an attorney and to recoup what members of my family have given thus far, and the expenses incurred by the bailbondsman that have left me and my family financially distraught
As actors we all want to work and get ourselves exposure but we also need to hold the industry to higher standard as well and serve as a valuable to not let what happened to me happen to other actors.
I have several attorneys who want to help and see me through this situation but it will involve a lengthy legal process which will incure a huge amount of fees which I completely understand,.
I am highly embarrassed that I am here asking for help like this but I am out of options and my friends, family, and peers are my last hope.
If anyone knows of an attorney who is willing to take the case PRO BONO please contact me.
Due to the nature of this charge I cannot leave the state or travel as I often do for my comedy gigs.
Thank You for taking the time to read my story.
THANKS & GOD BLESS
I was informed that the prosecution now believes that I did not bring the gun to the set and are now actively pursuing a case against the production company (ABOUT TIME ).. Secondly unfortunately they are still not letting me off the hook and have offered 3 years probation if I plead to false public alarm. I am anxious to get this over with more than anyone else. If they believe me, then why are they still wanting to bring charges against me. I am so confused right now, I would love everyone's input and thoughts on this latest development... In the meantime I am preparing for a trial...
This isn't aimed at anyone specifically, it's for the ones posting that don't get why this is an injustice that needs to be exposed. As an actor, Carlo expects the production company to have due diligence and obtain the permits. If he knew they hadn't gotten permits, do you think he'd have offered up the pellet gun, or just toss it. This isn't so much about the gun as it is the production company hanging him out to dry with no support for their illegal acts, ie; filming, prop gun, etc without permits. As well as them not getting any repercussions for the lack of said permits. It's not Carlo, but them that should be in his position, and the lack of common sense by the state to recognize that. He's also not some Hollywood rich type actor, but a working stiff New Jersey comedian taking bit parts to pay the bills. Now that aspect is limited by his restrictions on travel. That's also why his situation is newsworthy and noteworthy as to the unequal way the law was applied. Think about this before you post some rant about Carlo being a loser and wishing him the worst. If you still do so, everyone will know you're a troll and your life sucks so bad you have to make others feel as bad as you. Which won't work here.
This will not end up in state court -- it will be downgraded to a misdemeanor at worst. There is no incentive to or public interest in prosecuting a case like this on the facts. You should try to get it plead down to a non-criminal municipal ordinance violation. I think Joseph Donohue of Brickfield Donohue might be able to help.
This is very unfair...Carlo was an actor playing a role...they should put the producer in jail...he is the one who did not have the proper permits......Stop blaming the actor...he is not the one responsible for this issue....This is a miscarriage of justice......Chris Christie...needs to pardon....this young man.....Lori Tietjen
Carlo i too am going through a similar situation. But mine were legal guns that i had locked away dismantled and safe. I was reported by a family friend to the police and they came and took everything away. I am homeless and with very little money too. This State of NJ is a joke when it comes to our 2A rights. My weapons were purchased legally I went through a background check and passed whatever needed to be passed in order to obtain a weapon. But NJ doesnt recognize that. To make matters worse I have a NJ firearms permit and they dont wanna recognize this either. I am facing 5-10 years in jail also.
May 5th show sounds great, just wish it were down in FLA so I could go. Glade to hear everything is working out, so to speak, and remember "When this is over move south! Both the weather and legal climates are much more hospitable"... Best Wishes
Well said Bryon. On that note. Carlo... Get all the info you have on that production company and sue/for negligence on their part , defemasion of character because of their incompetence , pain, suffering, lost wages & punitive damages( means damages exceeding simple compensation and awarded ...to punish the defendant) plus lawyer fees ... All this you can sue for because it would never had happen if not for their incompetence. Remember ignorance is NOT an excuse, for those that hired you, to put you, your family & reputation in such a situation.
Really appreciate your generosity - From the bottom of our hearts

Where is common sense? There was no intent here. the AG should have drop charges period. This is the crazy's thing I have ever heard of in my life. You really have to be pretty hard up to go after this actor over this. Was not even his fault. WOW, you know when our country is full of laws that are almost unjust laws. You can go to jail for 5 years for not getting a permit for a movie set. No wounder we are where we are at. They go after law abiding citizens while letting criminals back on the street and they just cant understand why we have the crime problem that we have.
