Just two months into 7-year-old Rashid’s highly anticipated second grade year he would learn the insignificant lump on the inside of his leg was malignant…cancer! His biopsy was sent from Boise to Washington and California to confirm the findings. A few days later Rashid was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS). RMS is a rare malignant tumor of the muscles that are attached to the bones. Rhabdomayosarcoma spreads quickly so Rashid’s intensive treatments began right away. During the initial consultation with the doctor, Rashid identified ‘missing school’ amongst his biggest concerns. Despite two invasive surgeries, multiple rounds of chemo/radiation treatments, regular blood draws and scans Rashid insisted on coming to school every single chance he got. When he came he was positive and full of light.

When he finished his first round of treatment in the spring we were all very hopeful and positive his first scan would show NED (No Evidence of Disease). The last week of school he was looking physically exhausted and showing cold like symptoms. When I asked how he was feeling, in his reassuring voice he said, “don’t worry, I just have a little cold, I’m fine”. On the last day of school, his skin was very pale and his eyes had dark circles under them...

Ten days later we would learn the cancer had spread to his lung. Although Rashid was looking so forward to a treatment free summer with family and friends, he did not complain, he just wanted to do whatever he had to do to get rid of the cancer once and for all.

5 months later...
With an unwavering positive attitude and determined spirit, Rashid spent the majority of June up until just a few weeks ago in intensive treatment. When Rashid and his Mom went to his appointment to find out his scan results they were informed the cancer had spread to multiple distant areas. This devestating news was followed by the very difficult conversation regarding the reality that, they have done all they can for him. Rashid came back to school after his scan, his teacher asked him, "how did it go?" in his sweet voice he said, "promise you won't be sad? ...I'm going to die." The news broke the hearts of all of us who are blessed to know him. Taking him home to Iraq to spend his last months with his family, who he hasn’t seen since he was 2, was the only plan left...

Feelings of defeat and still in shock over the reality of the situation, Rashid’s Mother went to the doctor to discuss palliative care and seek permission for Rashid to travel. What she thought was the worst day of her life, took a positive turn when a very well known, highly respected Pediatric Oncologist from Seattle called and offered to take over Rashid’s treatment! He requested his Mom have him in Seattle the following day. Rashid and his family flew to Seattle right after his going away party with his classmates.

During the appointment with his new doctor, a biopsy of his lung tissue was taken. Over the next few days they will use the extracted tissue to determine which chemo the cancer responds to. Rashid will return to Seattle on Nov. 30th and will spend the month of December in treatment.

Up until now, Rashid’s Mom has respectfully declined offers for monetary assistance. She was informed today that the chemo treatments he will be receiving in Seattle are not covered by insurance since they are considered to be a 'new chemo'. Please consider donating to this family to help with their medical expenses and to support Rashid as he continues his courageous fight for healing. If you are unable to donate financially please send prayers/positive thoughts to Rashid.

Beautiful Rashid,
Yesterday on 12/26/2015 you moved on to a whole new pain/chemo/cancer free journey. You were taken from us far, far too soon. We cannot wrap our minds around this tremendous loss we are feeling, we don't understand why, we ponder the what if's, some of us are still in shock, and some of us are just counting our blessings for knowing you. Your warrior spirit made a big impression on the people you knew, the people you crossed paths with and on perfect strangers. We all miss you dearly my sweet friend. We will never, ever forget you and will be better people for knowing you and knowing of you. Rashid, you ARE indeed EPIC and we will be epic in your honor.
Rest peacefully Super Kid...
