I didn't really want to do this, there are lots of people out there hurting badly, but my situation isn't all that great.

At the beginning of this year, I was doing terribly. I could barely walk up stairs and barely stay on my feet.  My kidney disease had gotten worse. I stopped working full time at my job, because I was unreliable and couldn't make all my hours.

I started dialysis in June and got tested to be put on the kidney transplant list. In the middle of all the tests, they found a 60% blockage in one of my arteries and put a stent in.

It's been an intense few months between operations and dialysis, and I wasn't working for three months. I got by thanks to family, but I can't rely on them for everything. I applied for disability when my condition started to worsen in February, but I was rejected. My case is much stronger now that I'm on dialysis, and I got a lawyer, but the lawyer told me that she expects to get a hearing in February of 2019... a full year after I first applied.

I'm working one day a week at my old job, but it's hard for me to find work when I'm on dialysis three days a week. Including travel, dialysis is 4 - 5 hours of my life every other day. It's hard to be employed full time at a job when you have to leave early to go get dialysis. Working at my old job on a day I have dialysis is also very intense and I'm usually drained and unable to do much the next day.

The bills are starting to pile up, and while I'm a firm believer in digging myself out of my own problems, I'm not able to do that anymore.

So this GoFundMe covers approximately what I'd need to get through the next four months, to help get me to February 2019.

It mainly covers food, travel expenses (Metrocards and emergency Lyft/Uber/cabs when I need them) and any other emergency needs I may have. I'll be able to pay off the overdue debt on my cards and min pay them until disability comes through.

I got reminded today to update this.

Things are mostly ok. I'm getting closer to my 35th birthday.

My checking account is overdrafted. It has been since early Feb. I had a paycheck Friday, and my automatic payment to National Debt Relief brought me right to where I was before. Womp womp.

But that's life while waiting for a decision from our government on my health.

My friend was nice enough to get me a job working with her, but I won't get paid til next month.

Luckily, I'll get paid right before PAX East, which I plan on going to regardless. I hope to have Medicare by then and that way I can get dialysis treatment in Boston.

It's been a while since I updated last, the holidays came and went. I had an excellent trip to Philadelphia for PAX Unplugged back in early December. I've been going to dialysis like normal. My fistula matured, and I've no longer got a tube in my chest. I can shower like a normal human being.

I don't go out much, it's too cold and my stamina is really iffy. I had a great game of Dungeons and Dragons Friday that went long. It was a lot of fun, but ever since then, I haven't shaken my exhaustion. I've had a dialysis treatment since then, but I had to call out of work today. The 2nd week in a row, last week I had a scary incident with my fistula. It blew out and swelled immensely. It's fine now, but the first time things happen you panic and get really scared.

I want 2019 to be a banner year, but the reality is, I'm limited. I spent 12 hours in bed today and still feel like a freight train hit me.

Managing expectations has become something I'm learning to put in the forefront. I can't do everything at once.

I got good news from my laywer today. She's still gathering up all of the medical records and files for my case. She expects to submit my appeal at the end of the month.

She's going to try to get the hearing waived and get me approved sooner. I was looking at a Feb. hearing date, so sooner could be January, maybe even December.

Of course, I don't want to be overly optimistic, but when I do get disability, I'll be shutting off donations. I don't know when that is. If I happen to have anything left over (unlikely given how many close calls with overdrafting I've had), I'll donate to something like Hero Initiative or Hurricane relief.

It's November, I got through one month, and thanks to everyone's contributions, I paid some bills and my bank account isn't overdrafted! Small victories!

According to my lawyer, she'll be filing the paper work at the end of this month, then it's a waiting game with Social Security.

The system is slow, but I'll be glad to get the benefits when I do. They just decreased my food stamps benefit I think. I haven't been full time employed since December of last year, mostly because I can't physically handle the work. Social Security will reject my case if I make over a certain amount, so I've been hesitant to apply for another job. Plus, my old job has been good to me, they don't demand too much of my physically, and everyone at work is good about my limits.

The worse part of all of this is definitely dialysis itself. I'm sitting in a room hooked up to a machine to keep me alive and every other patient is old enough to be my grandparent or parent. Some of the nurses are older than me. It makes me very aware that a 34 year old man shouldn't be there. A lot has gone wrong in my life, but I'm not giving up, nor am I despairing. Lamenting? Sure, but not despairing.
