My Brother Mark Nichols lost everything in a house fire last night, to include his beloved dog "Nikki".  Mark made an attempt to go back in his home to save his dog and was unfortunately unsuccessful.  My brother was brought to Albany Medical Center and transferred to Weschester Medical Center burn unit last night. Mark suffered 3rd degree burns on his head, 2nd degree burns on his neck, he burnt his esophagus & he inhaled quite a bit of smoke and isn't outta the woods yet with that.  He will be having surgery to repair his esophagus and receiving several skin graphs for his head & neck .  For several years he has been struggling to stay above water financially, supporting himself and his boys. He is now in need of everything and anything to help him get back on his feet and reclaim his life.  Marks only vehicle was also damaged in the fire and it is unclear if it will be salvageable at this time.  He will most likely be in the hospital for several weeks and as of right now we are also working on where he will be residing after he is discharged. There is most likely nothing salvageable in his home and he will need to start completely over.  Mark is a single father of 2 adult children, living off his 40 hour a week job as a driver for Airgas. All while suffering with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) for the past decade and has been  receiving chemotherapy for his RA for the past 2 years. Mark has been a volunteer firefighter at Stanfford Heights Fire Department for 27 years and as an EMT for Mohawk Ambulance for almost 6 years.  Mark has spent half his life helping, caring, saving & sacrificing for others and now is in need of our help.  Please consider helping in anyway you can thru our fund or by sharing our cause. Thank you deeply from the bottom of my heart & soul. Mark means everything to me! We lost our mother 21 years ago and hes all I have left. We appreciate any and all help!

This week has been a bit tough do to the fact that his nerves in his head are regenerating, (which is amazing) but painful for him. He is healing and that is awesome! We are still waiting to here back from insurance regarding the next step that will be taken with his home that was lost. As always, we can not thank you all enough for all the support you have shown and continue to show. This long road wouldn't be possible with out it! ****UPDATE****
Just wanted to reach out and let you all know how things have been going with Mark as of late. He was seen this morning for treatment of his burns and his neck looks to be healing well. The head he may need to go back to Westchester for treatment on but that's still up in the air. His spirits are really good with all things considered but he gets tired very quickly if he tries to do to much. Trying to slow him down is not an easy task, lol. Anyone who knows my brother knows hes as stubborn as they come! Mark has still not been discharged to drive do to his heart. I will update after hes been seen by his cardiologist. He continues to stay with family at least for the next 2 weeks. His son Kevin, who is currently residing with his mother, is also doing well, just eager to get things back to as normal as possible with his Sophomore year of College coming up. We are all continually grateful for all the love & support everyone has shown and continues to show us! Although the road looks hard & long, it makes it just that little bit easier knowing there are people like all of you out there that care! As always, please keep those prayers coming! God Bless & keep looking out for any Updates!

Thank you so much for all of your continued support. We are so thankful to have Mark home and that he did not require a longer stay in the hospital. Unfortunately, he is not medically out of the woods yet. The hospital took his license due to their concern of his heart. At this time we are awaiting his cardiology appointment back at home. Though the hospital discharged him, he is required a cardiology follow up due to the thickening of his heart. Mark's oxygen is still not good, he gets winded easily and is very shaky. My brother is really in good spirits and so unbelievably overwhelmed with the kindness & warm well wishes. He is so grateful for his friends & family, his community & Stanford heights fire dept. and all the fire & EMS departments that where involved in saving his life and trying to save Nikki's! We will NEVER be able to say THANK YOU enough!

Today will be day 4 since my brother & his boys lost their home, belongings & most importantly their beloved dog Nikki. The rawness of the situation is now starting to settle in & cause much emotional pain! Mark physically seems to be healing well. He will need lots of time & prayers to help him get through day to day! His boys, "Connor & Kevin", as painful as there loss is, seem to be doing ok considering the circumstances. Please continue with your thoughts and prayers as well as sharing any information regarding #RallyForMarkNichols #NicholsStrong
We continue to be incredibly grateful for all the support we've been shown. Our hearts are full knowing there's so much compassion out there!
