I have been selected to compete in the Indian Pacific Wheel Race 2018, a 5500km solo unsupported cycling race from Fremantle to Sydney.  https://www.indianpacificwheelrace.com/

Most people I have spoken to believe I am crazy for attempting such a challenge. Those who know me understand I am extremely competitive and give 110% at any race I take on. I am always looking for the next adventure and I don't believe they get much bigger than this! I'm excited to be selected and am looking forward to the challenges I am going to face along the way.

To be competitive in this event I have had to purchase all new equipment and bike. I do not expect anyone to assist with covering these costs as I will be able to reuse all equipment and gear post IPWR 18.  However due to the investment made so far, I do need assistance with travel, accomodation and food costs associated with doing the race.

On average I will be riding between 350-450kms per day. The energy required to continue day after day for approx 14-17 days is extreme and I will be fueling this with food from service stations, milk bars and the occasional country pub. Most nights I will be sleeping out in the elements in my bivy, but an occasional stop at a hotel would be nice to be able to have a shower, as I am not carrying a change of clothes. Finally there is the travel and accomodation costs in getting to Fremantle and once I arrive in Sydney. I will most likley need a few days to recover before I will be able to travel back to Melbourne.

You will be able to track my progress and position in the race, day and night by clicking on the link below. (Link has not yet been released by race organisers. I will add it as soon as it is!)  I will also be providing regular updates on my Instagram page @ryzza1976,  please subscribe and join me on the journey across our great land!!

So I humbly ask for your assistance in any way you can help.  Any company donations over $250 will be entitled to a sticker with their logo printed and placed on my bike. I will also reference your company along my ride.
Any other requests to help me generate revenue, feel free to contact me.

Finally, Mel and I have recently had a very close friend diagnosed with Breast Cancer.  I am pledging that any money I raise above my goal or funds not required to complete the race, will be donated to the McGrath Foundation who raise funds to assist with providing breast care nurses to cancer sufferers.  McGrath Breast Care Nurses help individuals (and their families) experiencing breast cancer by providing physical, psychological and emotional support. From the time of diagnosis, and throughout treatment, this support is available for free.

Knowing how to support a friend throughout this experience feels impossible.

Hopefully by raising some money we can help to indirectly support many families and friends that are also facing this impossible task.

Thanks for your help,

Ryan.

Ry has almost reached Port Augusta with a massive 2445km in the week. The last few days have been a huge struggle. Your support means more than ever at the moment. Massive thankyou to those who have donated, it’s so heart warming to read the messages of support and see the donations coming in. I’ve been able to read many messages to Ry along the way which has helped immensely. Keep it up!! Mel x

Ryan’s had a tough first 400km with cramping for the first 6 hours. Since then has had vomiting and is struggling to keep any foods down.
Had a few hours rest to regain some strength but still struggling this morning. He’s pretty gutted that his body isn’t behaving the way it should. He was quick to remind me that it doesn’t compare to what people going through breast cancer treatment endure....hang in there Ry, we are all thinking of you.

Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to say a MASSIVE thank you to all those who have contributed so far!! Last night night we exceeded my targeted total of $5500. So now every dollar I raise will go straight to the McGrath Foundation.
Only 5 weeks to go and i'm excited to be able to share the GPS tracking link, so you can track all the participants riding from Fremantle to Sydney. With the race cancelled there is currently 33 riders still planning to start @ 6.22 on 17/03/18

As you are all aware the official Indian Pacific Wheel Race has been cancelled. I have been dealing with a whirl wind of emotions over the last 24hrs. There is a lot of blood sweat and tears (not only my own) to get me to where I am right now.

I have been questioning why I am doing this crazy event and the reasons are.
- To temporarily check out from the world as I know it. No work calls no emails and very little social media
- To compete in a race where I feel my abilities would make me highly competitive.
- To explore a large part of our great country in a way not many will, experience the amazing sunrises & sunsets across the Nullarbor, through the winery regions past the great Ocean Rd and the alpine region
- To show my kids that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.
- And finally two reason that were not the main reason I started, but a very large driving factor as why I am continuing.
• We live in a nanny state anda country where our rights to choose are questioned and often taken away. If Mt Everest was in Aus, there would be a lock on the gate at base camp and a sign that says trespasses will be prosecuted! The decision to cancel the race would not have come from the race organisers but from people who are more interested in putting the brakes on life experiences because someone may get hurt. People die in cars and on bikes every day. Its sad and tragic but it is life. These people don’t get why we do what we do. I am continuing as it my right to race/cycle across the country and nobody should be able to tell me I can’t. I’m doing it to promote safe cycling. To promote that cyclists are real people with wives and kids to go home to. To promote that cyclists need to respect other road users. To promote that a metre matters and if you have to slow down for 10 sec to pass a cyclist in a safe way its not the end of the world.
• I am also continuing as I know too many people who have experienced breast cancer, in particular two amazing people at different ends of the spectrum. One is about to start her journey and unfortunately the other is at the end of hers, but not without an amazing fight. These people and many others like them, don’t get the opportunity to quit when things haven’t gone their way. They have no option but to stand up and fight for what they want. They are an inspiration to me and the pain and suffering I will go through is pittance to what they have to deal with. Yet every time I see them they have always had a smile on their face. They are my motivation to make it to Sydney and in doing so I am hoping to raise a shit load of money for the McGrath Foundation, who support women with breast cancer by providing breast care nurses. So fuck the rules fuck the race, get on board and support me with any donation you can. This roller coaster is just starting and its going to be one hell of a ride so hang on!!!
