Race for the Base

Jennifer Kray was 23 years old when she suffered an unexpected, catastrophic brain bleed. Kray was an avid runner, a respite caregiver, and completing her master's of occupational therapy when life came to a screeching halt.

The morning of February 28, 2015, Kray endured an excruciating headache. After returning home from a morning of pheasant-hunting, her headache worsened to an intolerable level of pain. Standing up from the couch to get help, she collapsed to the floor, losing complete function of the left side of her body. Kray’s parents called 9-1-1. She was taken to the local E.R, where they confirmed her brain bleed. She was, then, flown to the University of Wisconsin-Madison Hospital for further care.

Located in the Pons-Medulla area of her brainstem, a tangle of vessels, called a Cavernous Angioma, burst. Kray’s on-call surgeon settled for a poor prognosis, deeming her brain bleed inoperable and choosing to observe the bleed, instead, Kray’s condition deteriorated rapidly throughout the night as her bleed got bigger and bigger. Not expected to survive the following day, she began receieving Palliative care.

During that time, an abundance of prayers from family and friends led the Base of Skull Neurosurgeon to her hospital door. Seeing Kray’s condition, inquiring about her case, and determined to give her a chance, with little expectations he took me to surgery immediately. Beating the odds, Kray survived the procedure. She awoke the next morning, able to move her eyes and the tip of her right thumb. With an incredibly devoted support system, Kray has been recovering ever since.

In her interest of continuing such miracles and the gift of second chances, Kray founded Race for the Base, a charity 5k run/walk to support Base of Skull Neurosurgery Research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

ALL PROCEEDS will be donated to this cause.
Race for the Base 5k will take place MAY 5, 2019.
