Friends and family, I'm not one that likes to ask anyone for anything but this campaign is something I strongly believe in. My nephew, Jeff Hansen was diagnosed with a very progressive form of MS at the age of 27. He was the life of the party....he loved to snowboard, run, play soccer, dance, hunt & fish. Due to the progression of the MS, Jeff suffers from severe foot drop where the brain no longer tells the calf muscle to contract in order to lift his feet. Through his physcal therapist, he was given a pair of WalkAide's for a 2 week trial period. The WalkAide is a cuff worn around the calf which stimulates the appropriate nerve to lift the foot at the right time while walking, prompting a more natural, efficient and safe walking pattern. After trying these out, he called me, ecstatic that it gave him the freedom to move about more easily and to actually climb up stairs. Prior to this, he needed someone to physically pick up his feet and move them to climb up even one step. These WalkAide's, even though they have a remarkable success rate in MS patients have only been approved by insurance for spinal cord injuries. They are very expensive, $9,325 for the pair. (Ridiculous)...I promised him I would do everything I can to make sure that he is able to get them. The VocRehab of the State of Vermont has agreed to pay $1500 and the MS Society is going to provide $750. I thank you in advance for anything you can do to help me to help Jeff improve his quality of life.
