Here's a link to the YouTube Video  above.

This is the funding campagin for CARBURETOR, a queer student film.  The story focuses on a young transgender man CASEY who is a mechanic, and has a difficult relationship with his father.  He also swallows down a lot of verbal abuse from he and his father BUDDY-JO's mutual car repair shop boss GARY, and thinks about running away all the time.  When he tries to get a carburetor from his boss, things go south but he finds the strength to fight back when he overhears his father revealing a huge secret to his boss Gary.

To us, this is more than just about making a film. We would like to reach a large range of viewers who feel they can relate to our film's narrative, or relate to the character's emotions and struggles in various ways.  While delivering the message that everyone should not be afraid to be who they really are, we are also advocating for the cause to put more queer people on screen and behind the scenes.  Below are some brief introductions of our key cast and crew:

Robin, our LEAD, is a trangender man.  Here is his Audition Tape .

Brad, the WRITER of the script, is himself a member of the queer community and has written many other queer related pieces.

Christine, our PRODUCER, is a 1st year graduate producing student. She first had some experience in documentary filmmaking during her time in undergrad, which sparked her interest in film production. She's excited to be working on her very first student production as the producer.

Alex, our DIRECTOR, is a non-binary transmasculine person.  Some of their work could be found HERE.  Born in Oklahoma and raised in Taiwan, Alex realized their identity rather late in life due to lack of information.  After they came out, however, they have since became an advocate for transgender people, built non-binary communities in Taiwan, and written and directed many queer characters in their stories.

Joe, our 1st AD, is a documentary and film director and editor. Graduating from the Communication University of China, he is now a second-year grad student in Chapman University.  His documentary "Coming Back Home Together" was nominated in Vision Youth Award for "Best Documentary" and screened in more than a hundred of universities in mainland China. As a transgender gay, he devotes himself to telling stories for edging community.

Ai, our CINEMATOGRAPHER, currently pursuits her MFA degree at Chapman University. She has worked as a cinematographer, photographer and editor after receiving double-major bachelor degrees in Graphic Communication and Film / Television at Taipei, Taiwan. Speaking for marginalized people on the fringe of society, Ai dedicates to create affecting visual images that explore psychological probing, feminist issues and self/other transformation.  Some of her work could be found HERE .

Olivia, our EDITOR, was born in China and attended University of California, Irvine where she completes her Bachelor's Degree in Film and Media Studies with a minor in Digital Filmmaking.  By combing through a film’s raw footage, isolating individual shots from multiple takes, and choosing which frames to keep or delete, she weaves the storyline into a cohesive final product.  As a film editor, she always believes the edit can act as a connective tissue, enabler of space, and even emotional amplifier in movies.

Andree, our SOUND DESIGNER, dedicates her life to the appreciation of cinema from working in film festivals to mixing sound in mix rooms. After years of working in Women Make Waves Film Festival in Taiwan, which aims to promote gender equality and LGBTQ rights, she came to Chapman University to pursue an MFA degree in Sound Design. She is interested in telling the stories of the underrepresented.

We start filming on Nov. 1, and wrap up production on Nov. 4.  We're filming at two locations near school for the carshops, and one location in Anaheim for the family house.  Here are some pictures of the locations:

Here are two candidates for our PICTURE TRUCK, which in itself is a very important character in the story.

Donations will go to:
1.  Art Department.  Around half of the donation will go to location and picture truck rental, furniture and prop rental and materials for set dressing.  We want to create a very unique world with many details in which the characters dwell.

2.  Stunt and Special Effect.  We have a fight scene at the very end of the film, so we will need to hire a professional stunt coordinator to keep everyone safe.  An experienced stunt coordinator could also help with the choreography of the fight and they will know the best way to shoot it so it looks authentic.  After the fight, the actors will have wounds, which a professional special effect makeup artist could help create.  This will roughly cost 500.

3. Camera Department.  We will need generators for some exterior scenes.  Since there's quite a bit of physical conflict in the film, we will also need to rent a remote focus puller.  These equipment are not available to us from school.  This will roughly cost another 500.

4. Transportation.  We will need to rent trucks to carry our equipment and furniture/props from location to location.  We will need one truck for the grip equipment and one for art department.  This costs about 700 for a 4 day shoot.

5. Gas Compensation.  Although actors' payments are deferred, we will still compensate them for gas.  Including rehearsal and shoot dates, it will cost roughly 300 for all three actors.

Wow! We actually made it to 50%! It's really difficult to explain to all of you how much this means to us and how much we appreciate it, so I think instead I'll post this blueprint of shots in a particular scene that I spent all night making last night. It is by far the most complicated floor plan/blocking I've ever designed.

哇!居然已經達到目標的一半了!真的很難用言語表達這對我們而言的意義還有我們的感激,因此想和大家分享我昨天熬夜整晚畫的這張平面+場面調度圖。這應該是我目前為止畫過最複雜的了!

Thanks again to everyone who’s pitched in! We are approximately two weeks from shooting. Every night it’s either auditions, discussing shotlist or storyboarding, not to mention the work that needs to be done to get props, permits, agreements, and so on.

But with this amount of passion we are motivated to keep moving! Attached is a very badly sketched storyboard that I made for one of the scenes. Please disregard the bad drawing lollll
