As the news media is praising Jack Rosenberg, a US Coast Guard auxiliary pilot, who crash landed his Cessena single engine plane into some trees directly behind a busy Creskill, NJ school playing field, Jack and his co-pilot Erik lie in the hospital with severe bodily injuries that will keep them out of their jobs for more than half a year. Jack had a split-second decision to make between safely landing the failing aircraft on the large level playing field while putting the children who usually play there at risk, or attemping a more dangerous landing several hunderd feet away. Knowing Jack and his countless acts of kindness, I am not surpirsed that he put the safety of the young adolescent school children ahead of himself. However, also knowing Jack's devotion to his wife Miriam and his seven children, he must have also weighed the potential hardships his close family will endure as a consequence of his sacrifice. What can and must we do to help Jack and other volunteers like him?
Assisting Jack's family goes beyond the call of repaying his heroism; it builds the foundation for future acts of heroism and sacrifice. By consistently establishing a safety net for heroes in their time of need, these heroic volunteers' minds are not muddled by anguished decisions requiring them to choose between their close families and innocent school children. The volunteers' knowledge and expectation that the community will step forward and assist their hurting family in their time of need, simplifies their decision making process in those critical seconds. It is one thing for volunteers to sacrifice themselves; it is quite another for them to bring their families to the alter with them. With a safety net for their families in place, these heroic volunteers have peace of mind, knowing that their families will be taken care of should there be the need. With a clear conscience, their minds are also clear to act in the most professional way, reaching the best possible results.
Jack Rosenberg embodies the spirit of communal volunteerism. He regularly volunteers his time and effort to search and rescue missions, and whose daring missions during hurricane Irene are legendary. No act of kindness is too large or too small for him, pushing him to be a member of the good samaritans who patrol the roads of Rockland and Sullivan counties, offering aid to distressed traverlers. I call upon the public to step forward, generously contributing to the fund assisting Jack Rosenberg and his family, thereby supporting the spirit of volunteersim, firmly establising it within our communites. Jack and his volunteering friends must know that we have their backs.
