A shelter for men and rescue horses.  Men care for the horses and the horses care for the men.

If alcoholism has impacted your family and/or if you love horses, please read on!!!!

This is a letter to call “all hands on deck” for an unbelievable man who is the only man to have ever helped my son, taught my son through patience and stories, believed in my son when no one else gave him the time and effort that he needed.  This man has saved my son’s life and given him hope.  That man’s name is Dave Pitkin.  Owner and founder of the Skyland Ranch in Gold Bar, Washington.  My son now works for room and board for Dave.  I am very proud of my son and thankful for Dave.  More on Dave's story in a minute.

Skyland Ranch is a place where men can live in a drug free environment for long term drug and alcohol rehabilitation working with horses and the community.   As a functioning horse ranch, they provide a quality of life and self-esteem building opportunities that are perfect for long term recovery.  They also give abandoned and stray horses another chance at life in a beautiful, peaceful setting.  The ranch also hosts inner city youth outings, provides community service, volunteering, parades and community acitivity support and host community events.

Skyland Ranch is Not for Profit Corporation, eligible to receive your charitable donations.  Most of the young men do not have the resources by themselves to cover the costs of living. They have done all they can to keep tuitions low; your charitable contributions can help these young men prepare for life back into society, the horses fed and properly cared for and to help keep the lights on.

Now, back to Dave Pitkin:

Dave Pitkin owns and runs this charity organization for late stage alcoholics and drug addicts on the beautiful Skykomish river in Gold Bar, Washington.   Skyland Ranch was founded and is run by Dave Pitkin who is in his 70’s.  Dave has a storied career as a lawyer, prosecutor, judge, private pilot, horseman and much more.  Dave is the most benevolent, caring, patient leader I have ever encountered and the only man that ever gave my son a chance at a sober life.  He saw something in my son.  You would love Dave.  He has hearing aids in both ears, is a true cowboy, his wife has  cancer yet he still gives everything he has for all of these young men who have nowhere else to go.  I am divorced and could not afford to pay the full tuition but Dave liked my son so much and is so caring that he allowed me to pay what I could to keep my son at the Ranch.  My son now works at the ranch for room and board.  Dave also has a few older chronic alcoholics that he allows to live at the ranch for free as long as they work.  He provides them food and shelter which is incredible in itself to me.

Now, a little about my son:

My son is 29 and is a critical stage 4 alcoholic.  He has been through 10 rehabilitation programs including one in the US Marine Corps.  My son is a fantastic young man with a disease that he did not ask for and one that he does not want.  He has never been in serious trouble despite his disease and all of the misery it has brought him.   We tried every possible way to find help for for my son and needed a miracle.  I was out of money and the State of Ohio offered no help for alcoholics.  On a last ditch effort one day a few years ago I found the Skyland Ranch and Dave Pitkin and for the first time in my son's life, he found someone that could guide him and teach him how to live a sober life.

Now more on the Ranch:

The Skyland Ranch is an equine therapy facility in a valley, on the Skykomish River with beautiful views of the Cascade Mountains on all sides.  This is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited and provides peace, tranquility and healing for men and horses.   As a way to raise money, they take tourists on trail rides along the river.  The young men at the Ranch get paid $10 to take a tourist group on a ride when they get paying customers.   If you would have asked me a year ago if my son would know how to go get a horse in a field, bring him back to the paddock, saddle up the horse and take tourists on trail rides, I would have said it was impossible.  Not because he could not do it at all but because he did not have the confidence in himself to do anything, the knowledge or experience with horses especially and had no one but myself, his grandmother and aunt that believed that he could do all of this while learning to live a sober life.  Now my son is a competent ranch hand and knows all of the horses (30 plus) and takes care of them all with the confidence of someone who has been doing this their entire life.  I am truly amazed at the work of Dave Pitkin.

What is the problem and why am I writing to you?

Dave Pitkin has given his life, resources and all of his savings to the ranch.  He lives in a house on the ranch and is a guiding light to all of these young men and parents who had lost all hope.

The Skyland Ranch is in dire need of cash for many things:

Immediate Needs

1.  Hay!!!  They need to feed 30+ horses that costs $8,500 per load of hay.  They got their last load on loan as they did not have the money to pay for it.

2.  Working Cash to pay the bills:  Cost of lighting and heat.  Food, gas for transportation and medical care for the horses.

3.  New vehicles, repairs to the aging buildings and cabins.

The ultimate goal would be to raise $200,000 and more long term to provide the cushion that my aging hero needs.

Ask your friends to donate just $10 to help.  We need to reach thousands of people if we can.  If you know friends who can donate a lot more, they can write it off their taxes as a charitable donation.  Please share this with friends, co-workers and family.

We all want to thank you for reading about Dave and the Skyland Ranch, your kind generosity and your willingness to reach out to someone who has shared his life giving to others in need.
