The local Detroit chapters of Groove Phi Groove S.F.I and Swing Phi Swing S.F.I have collaborately established a support effort in the wake of the water crisis in Flint, MI to help families that have been impacted. We created the "Flint Family Assistance Fund"; a program to provide monetary donations ranging from $250-$500 to families in the Flint community to aid in their immediate needs for clean water, sanitary items, household goods, medical needs, and bill payment assistance. Please support our efforts to connect with needy families in Flint, MI. Your tax dedctible donation will touch the lives of fellow citizens in need.
Letter to the Public:
The local Detroit Graduate chapters of Groove Phi Groove, Social Fellowship, Inc.® and Swing Phi Swing Social Fellowships, Inc.® would like to express that as the entire nation is watching and following the unfolding story of the Flint, Michigan water crises, we are truly disheartened, sympathetic and infuriated about the state and living conditions of the residents in that community due to the lack of usable drinking water. Detroit is approximately one hour away from Flint, Michigan and hence is a reality very close to home. We have friends, family, sisters and brothers that are being impacted directly by this travesty.
As this news has reached all corners of our nation and even the United States White House, it is proving to be a continuously unfolding scandal of deceit, disregard and pure irresponsible measures that government leadership did not weigh appropriately to determine the risks and impact to human lives. As you are following the news stories and seeing the heart-wrenching effects to the families and children of Flint, please know that this is the impetus needed to truly reflect in our deeds/actions who we are as an organization! This is when we show up to effect and make change that is much needed in our society and especially in our immediate communities. The provision of a basic human need for a good quality of life is being denied to fellow American citizens (our brothers and sisters) in the year 2016. The very stories we hear about and see of far-away lands in the media - where there is no drinking water available to a community, has also become an unfortunate reality for us.

We will be working with a local school/community in Flint, Michigan, to identify families that we can connect with and help navigate through this horrific situation. We plan to become connected, stay connected and support these families in whatever ways possible beyond even the monetary donations because they will need the continual support of the community to manage and heal (days, months and years) into the future from this tragedy. We want to reassure the Flint residents that there is goodness in people – although their leadership failed them. We want them to know that Groove Phi and Swing Phi are people they can count on to support them!
