Evan Studies Abroad!
My name is Evan Bossio and I am a sophomore pursuing a double major in Sociology and International Studies, as well as a minor in Spanish at Penn State University. I am reaching out for your support. Starting this July I will be studying in the amazing city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. This program, provided by Penn State and the Institute for International Education of Students Abroad, will allow me to complete my Spanish degree as well as many other requirements for my concurrent majors. I am very fortunate to go to this school which has provided me with generous aid and scholarships, however, I still do not have all of the financial resources necessary to pay for all aspects of this trip. Specifically, I hope to fundraise $4,000 to cover my roundtrip airfare, books, food, and other expenses. I will be spending the coming months applying for additional scholarships and working in State College, PA to pay for as much of my tuition as possible.
I come from a dedicated family that is very passionate about hardwork. My grandparents immigrated to the United States from Calabria, Italy with their three children, one of whom is my father. Almost 30 years ago they founded "Bossio's Deli." Throughout the years this deli became a staple in Lawrenceville, NJ gaining recognition throughout the state for its family values and enjoyable atmosphere (and awesome sandwiches of course). My dad and his uncle took over the business from my grandfather and worked very hard to keep it going. Unfortunately, this past year we lost ownership of the deli and a multi-decade, multi-generational family chapter ended in this book that we call life. Watching this unfold before me taught me that sometimes your hardest work may not be good enough, but giving up is not an option. Both of my parents have given everything they have to my two brothers and me, teaching us about the importance of responsibility and fighting through the uphill battle. Throughout this recent financial hardship we have done everything we can to stay positive and keep moving forward. My parents, along with the help of Penn State, have given me all they can whether that be financial, emotional, or mental support.
My education means everything to me, and I believe this opportunity abroad will increase it tenfold. Argentina can provide me with a unique cultural lense that will teach me to look at the world from a new and exciting perspective. From the historical Plaza de Mayo to the artistically colorful La Boca, Buenos Aires has a hugely diverse population. By studying both the language and the people, I can further my abilities as a sociologist. The intersection of sociology and culture studies is my primary focus in school and by spending five months in another country, I will increase my skills in analyzing the people and their actions. The ultimate goal of my education is to pursue a career in public policy where I can apply the knowledge I gained both abroad, and in the United States as a student, to numerous domestic and foreign social issues.
