Jesse's Story:
Jesse Shaw is 33 years old and was born in Morristown, New Jersey on October 27, 1982. His father, Dave Shaw, has owned Morris Magneto on Washington Street in Morristown (across from Whole Foods) since the 1980s. Morris Magneto is famed for making breakthrough advancements to the magneto spark commonly used in Harley Davidson Motorcycles. It was here that Jesse spent countless hours as a kid being around motorcycles and gaining a passion for mechanics. Jesse grew up living in nearby Randolph, New Jersey with his fun-loving mother Carol Shaw and his talented sister Sara. He attended Shongum Elementary School in Randolph, where so many of his peers became fortunate enough to have met the quick-witted, social stand-out. Jesse grew up as a typical kid skateboarding, playing soccer, lacrosse, and even being a part of the Photo Club in high school. Since his youth, Jesse has always been a hard worker and developed a second-to-none work ethic that continues to echo throughout his life today. He spent countless hours after school and summer days at Murphy's Garage in Morristown as a mechanic's apprentice. It was here that Jesse further advanced his existing understanding and interest in automobiles and mechanics in general and how things work.
After graduating Randolph High School in 2001, Jesse wasted no time and went to work full-time at Murphy's Garage. During this time Jesse found a passion and love for computer systems and decided that he could see himself working with computers as a career. He began taking classes at County College of Morris, where he earned an Associate of Arts degree and eventually acceptance into the Rutgers University School of Business in 2005. While at Rutgers, let's just say Jesse had fun. In fact, he had a lot of fun. Rutgers Fest, football games, cookouts, Manasquan Beach houses, and even last-minute trips to Atlantic City to spend what little a college student could afford to lose at the black jack table. Oh yeah, it was a lot of fun. But what still makes Jesse a standout in many people’s eyes is that, with all the distractions and activities that college life offers, Jesse still managed to set himself apart from the pack by graduating from Rutgers School of Business (New Brunswick, NJ) in 2008 with a degree in both Business Management, as well as a degree in Information Technology and Informatics. During this time Jesse also continued to work, helping his father at Morris Magneto, as well as spending several hours a day working at the Rutgers Business School of Computer Sciences.
After graduation from college, Jesse continued to assist his father at Morris Magneto, helping him to further grow the existing business. In 2010 Jesse took a job with the IT firm called Data Now as a hardware specialist and data center technician. Here Jesse got his feet wet in the IT field developing what would be a promising start to a career in Information Technology. In the years to follow Jesse found himself growing in the ranks as an Account Executive at such IT firms as Fortress ITX and Internap Network Services. During this time Jesse became a proud resident of Hoboken, New Jersey, where he currently resides. Jesse was no doubt on a path to success with a fierce drive and determination; it appeared nothing could derail him from a life of great accomplishments and happy, promising moments for years to come.
In April of 2013 those dreams and ambitions were sidelined when Jesse was suddenly diagnosed with an extremely rare form of Pediatric Cancer, a form of sarcoma called Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor also known as DSRCT.
DSRCT is a very aggressive cancer and is most commonly found within the abdominal cavity in adolescents and young adults. While many cancer treatment centers that Jesse visited refused to conduct any medical procedures or make any surgical efforts to assist in Jesse’s fight, he finally found an ally at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. It was here that he was approved by the Institutional Review Board to take part in the treatment protocol led by his primary physician Dr. Heather Magnan. Jesse became the first person in history to be approved over the age of 29 years old for the treatment; he was 31. To put it into perspective, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is one of the top 10 largest treatment centers on the planet, and they only see just 20 cases of DSRCT a year.
Since being diagnosed, Jesse has spent almost the past 3 years receiving radiation treatment, as well as experimental concoctions of chemotherapy. Jesse’s will to beat his disease is demonstrated every day as he undergoes countless experimental treatments and serious surgical procedures in an attempt to remove several tumors that have formed within his abdominal area. Despite Jesse’s determination to maintain a “normal” lifestyle and despite all of the chaos and uncertainty surrounding his health, he continued to work a full-time job just to make sure he didn’t miss a beat. Unfortunately, with his current health status demanding that he spend all of his time in doctor offices and treatment centers, Jesse was forced to step out of his role within the IT firm Net Access, leaving him unemployed at the present moment. Now Jesse is taking his trailblazing attitude to new heights again by becoming the very first person to make it this far in the history of the disease. On February 5th Jesse was supposed to be have a catheter surgically implanted in his head in order to begin receiving 4 treatments of 8H9, a new radioactive treatment that claims to be non-toxic. However, during a prescreening MRI doctors have found more tumors in Jesse’s body located near the Sternum and around the his lungs. He will at this point have to go through yet another fatiguing stint with chemotherapy treatment.
At this time, we would like to ask all of Jesse’s friends, former colleagues, classmates, or even those who had the pleasure of having a casual beer with him to please help support Jesse in his fight against cancer. Although Jesse receives disability income, it is certainly not enough for him to cover his expenses at this time. Jesse’s mother, Carol, stays with her only son in their one-bedroom apartment in Hoboken so Jesse can be close to his treatment center in Manhattan. As you can imagine, Jesse’s family, and of course he himself, have been through a great deal over the past 3 years, and it is now time that we as his friends, neighbors, colleagues, and community step in and help Jesse stay comfortable and focused on recovery over the next 6 months, without having the added stress that money adds to the situation. Please note that Jesse has decided to donate a portion of his own donations to raising awareness for Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor (aka DSRCT).
Whether you have $1 or $1,000 that you feel you can spare for our brave friend, all will be accepted and ALL will be greatly appreciated. Jesse’s fight is not only special because of the rareness of his disease, or the countless experimental procedures and treatments that he has had to endure, or the fact that he has been diagnosed with a cancer that someone his age should have no business having. Jesse’s fight is special because Jesse is special. He his bright, loyal, hardworking, and overall just a damn good time everywhere he goes. Let’s face it, even while fighting a remarkably aggressive cancer, Jesse has maintained more of a social life than 99% of you reading this now. That’s just who he is. I guess you just can’t keep a good guy down. So help Jesse stand up to cancer and beat it once and for all!
