Disclosure is always a tough thing. On July 30th of 2015 my 10 year old daughter took the courageous step of telling me that a close relative had been abusing her and her sister for years. This news devastated our family, and since then we've embarked on the most trying journey we've ever faced. Our time and finances have been tied up with counseling appointments, meetings with law enforcement and detectives, doctor's visits, and court appearances.
The strength and courage our girls have shown is beyond measure. Throughout this horrible process they've remained kind, loving, and have showed remarkable bravery in trying to overcome what they've been through. I couldn't be more proud of them. Both have been diagnosed with chronic PTSD (among other things) and are showing gradual process towards being the girls they have the right and potential to be through therapy and healing.
I am currently pregnant with our third child, and though we've had help from some people with paying for all these unexpected expenses (counseling, medical, etc), there's still so much we're paying for out of pocket and our savings has drained.
What I want to do is a bedroom makeover for the girls. They will need to share for a period of time due to limited space and the baby requiring use of one of the rooms, and their counselor has recommended positive changes to house and lifestyle to encourage healing and to help the past fade.
We need about $1000 for each girl to cover a new bed (Twin from IKEA), a smaller size dresser each (IKEA), new mattress each (one of them is still using MY mattress from when I was 3!), new bedding, room dividing curtians/hardware, and enough left over for paint and supplies.
This means so much to us and will mean the world to them. We want to hopefully collect towards our goal until Halloween, then in early November have them out of the house for the day while we (hopefully with some volunteers) redo one of the rooms to get them comfortably into one. Seeing them happy and surprised with something so pleasant that will benefit the whole family would be a blessing.
