Hey!
My name is Philip Riddick and I am an upcoming first-year teacher and recent grad from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Beginning August 16th, I'll be teaching 10th Grade English at Yes Prep Southside, home of the Giants, here in Houston, Texas. For those who are not familiar, Yes Prep Public Schools is an open-enrollment public charter school system serving students in grades six through twelve in Houston’s most underserved communities. Its mission is to increase the number of students from underserved communities who graduate from college prepared to lead. (Learn more about Yes Prep here).
For me, teaching, and more broadly, education has always been the dream. As a black male, my presence in the classroom is invaluable to the learning of all children as it will bring an often underrepresented perspective. Specifically, research has proven that black students who have black teachers perform better, have a higher level of academic achievement, and, most importantly, they feel more comfortable in the classroom. Now, why am I asking for your money?
It is an undisputable fact that schools in the United States do not allocate appropriate funds for classroom supplies and tools that advance student learning. (read this article that covers the #OutOfMyPocket social media campaign if you want/need more context!).
As a first-year teacher just leaving college, I personally have even less money than many of my soon-to-be teacher colleagues.
This is where you come in:
With your donations, I will be able to purchase supplies over the course of the school year to maximize my student's learning.
