Vietnam Medical Outreach Trip

Donation protected
Hello, it's me!

My name is Van. I'm currently a freshman at UC Berkeley, and this summer I will be traveling to different cities/provinces in Vietnam with Volunteer Medical Outreach (VMO) and Aid for Children Without Parents (ACWP) this summer to assist doctors during clinical sessions as well as to teach basic health lessons to school children.  Throughout the school year, VMO members also fundraise and collect donations to buy medicines and medical supplies needed to run mobile clinics, hepatitis B vaccination clinics, and corrective surgery programs held each summer in Vietnam. This page is to seek for more donations to help fund these services this summer.

A little bit about me and why this is important to me.
As a Vietnamese immigrant who moved to the States at the age of 12, I partially did some of my growing up in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam. I also spent some time in the province of Ben Tre every summer until I moved to the States. There, I met and got to know people who have little access to healthcare, some of those, I now hold dearly to my heart.  There, I met those who have to travel long distance to the city to have their body care for. There, I met and know people who restrain themselves from going to the hospital, because they afraid that they will not be able to afford it, or just simply afraid. To those people, I, a very priviledge person, hope that these trips will somehow help and this is why I'm fundraising for this cause!!!!!
They are part of the reasons why I want to participate in this trip. The other reason why is because I hope that this trip will somehow reconnect me to the country that I grew up in, I hope that it will connect me beyond the families and friends that I have there, but to the greater community. I hope that it will allow to look at Vietnam with a different analysis, since this time I will not just be going back to visit my family.
Moving here at such a young age, I grew up with no analysis of how and why things are happening the ways they are in Vietnam, and not until I became sociallly and politically aware through working with the community in Philadelphia, that I started to question my Vietnamese identity. I feel like I'm always questioning and trying to understand my identity as Southeast Asian (American), I'm always questioning and trying to challenge the inequalities here in America, but I know so little about what is going on in Vietnam, the country in which I grew up in. I don't know where to begin to learn how to work toward some of the changes that I want to see happening in Vietnam because I do not have much understanding about the power structure, that hxstory, that struggles. So I hope that this trip will somehow allow me to have more conversations with the people there, to learn and to grow.
I understand that service will not address the causes of the healthcare issues within Vietnam, but on the way to the bigger changes, we need these trips and services while addressing the deeper causes of these problems.

Anyway, all the money that will be fundraised through this site will directly contribute to the funding for the mobile clinic, medication, supplies, and the funding for a surgery this summer.
None of this money will contribute our traveling costs, so no worries!!!

I will thankful for whatever amount of money you are able to donate!

With care,
Van
