Put Melinda First (Ferszt) NOW!

$94,870 of $180,000 goal

Raised by 865 people in 8 months
This crowd funding campaign was created by the friends of Melinda Ferszt with the goal of providing practical support to meet the challenges which lie ahead of Melinda and her family.

As you can see from these photos Melinda is a beautiful, vibrant young woman but she has recently been diagnosed with cancer with a very poor prognosis.  She hasn't been desperately ill for a long time, so this diagnosis has come as a shock and shaken us all to our core.  The doctors have essentially thrown their hands in the air and said there is nothing they can do so she and we (her friends and family) are devastated – but determined to do everything we can to support Melinda through this.

Let me tell you a little about Melinda.  She is a loving wife and mother to 2 beautiful little girls.  She is a devoted daughter, sister and aunt.  She is a loyal and dependable friend.   She is a diligent and supportive colleague who works tirelessly in support of children’s charities.  She is a kind and generous soul who never fails to enquire after others, even when she is facing her own challenges.  Melinda is one of those people who brightens the day of everyone she encounters with her warm and gentle manner.  She is solid gold.

The doctors say there is nothing to be done but that doesn’t mean we do nothing.  Melinda and her adoring husband Mark are looking at every possible treatment which might buy her time with her beloved daughters who are only 4 and 8 years old and who need their mummy.   Most of the therapies given to people in Melinda’s position are not covered under the national health service and they are all very costly.

Friends and colleagues have asked how they can help, and this is it.  What we are asking via this platform is for people to give what they can and share this post as far and wide as possible to help Melinda and Mark meet the medical bills which are coming and alleviate some of the stress, so they can spend their time and energy together with their girls.

Time is of the essence so please help NOW!

Although Melinda has been doing really well and responding amazingly to her treatments so far, it cannot be overstated that she still has a long way to go with many serious battles ahead before she achieves her ultimate outcome. What follows is a letter from Melinda’s Cancer Navigation Specialist and Advocate, Grace Gawler, who has summarized Melinda’s path forward from this point. In her letter Grace states a figure which we are aiming to raise for Melinda but we must remember that this figure is in addition to the money already raised, which have been used to fund her treatment thus far.

We’ll be releasing details of a Fundraising Event for Melinda on the Gold Coast in August in the coming days. We hope many of you will be able to attend to support Melinda in person.

RE Melinda Ferszt

Funding Support Letter: TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN 1 April 2019

This letter is to authenticate the necessity of fundraising to assist Melinda Ferszt. The Grace Gawler Institute is cautious about revealing the identity of our clients; but sometimes there are very special reasons why it is essential to do so; and of course, always with their permission.

Belle Gibson’s notoriety for falsely declaring she had cancer and then accruing funds for non- existent treatment, recently rocked the cancer fundraising world, denting the good will and generous spirit of internet funders. Faith needs to be restored, so it is imperative that all patients who wish to raise funds via the internet for cancer treatment, authenticate their diagnosis, story and treatment plans to their potentially generous supporters.

As well, I believe that cancer patients also have a duty of care to their funders. They have a responsibility to use funds wisely, choosing bone-fide scientific and medically validated treatments rather than unverified alternative medicine clinics, day care clinics and hospitals offering poor evidence-based cancer medicine.

Having assisted Melinda as her cancer navigator since her diagnosis in September 2018, she more than qualifies to gain your trust and compassion for her situation.

At 35 years of age no one expects a diagnosis of a primary cancer and certainly no one expects a diagnosis of a metastatic cancer, especially colon cancer that has metastasised to liver. Melinda was shocked when diagnosed and virtually symptom free. But today; with the burden of cancer diagnosis increasing; this is the reality that some people face through no fault of their own. Our genes/DNA can be affected by all types of challenges in today’s world, and sometimes those challenges result in a diagnosis of cancer.

Melinda has cared well for herself during her life and looks a picture of health and vitality. She faces her diagnosis every day with elegance, dignity and a clear passion to do whatever it takes to restore her health and wellbeing.

Not surprisingly, most people are unprepared for this life-changing experience at a time in their lives when raising children and doing their best to be a present and proactive mum involved with school activities, drop-offs, sports days, children’s after hours hobbies etc. In today’s world, illness places a huge emotional and financial burden on families and an intensely physical burden on patients as they recover from treatments amidst the duties of being a mum.

Melinda’s primary cancer has regressed. Now there are just a few lesions remaining in her liver. Some cancer patients can be successfully treated here in Australia; and initially to get her cancer under control, Melinda began her treatment on the Gold Coast. But, once under control, more needed to be done to achieve remission. In Melinda’s case, her best ongoing treatment options lie overseas; particularly in Japan and possibly at a German university hospital where the world expert in interventional radiology successfully treats patients with liver metastases.

Melinda has already visited Japan twice this year for cell-based immune therapy at Japan’s leading and highest quality control immunotherapy facility, an institute that has been delivering immune therapies in a clinical setting since the early 1990’s. With this value-add treatment alongside chemotherapy, her response so far has been excellent! But more is needed to apply direct treatment to remaining liver metastases. Even a decade ago the outlook for patients like Melinda was dismal; but today new targeted technology has changed that expectation.

Insurances do not cover these treatments and extra expenses that can prove to be life-saving.

Medical and scientific treatments implemented by some of the worlds leading cancer experts can not only buy time for Melinda – but offer realistic hope, remission and long-term survivorship.

Will you help Melinda to realise her goals as a recovered cancer patient, wife, mother, daughter and community member? Can you help Melinda to Survive and Thrive?

With 44 years’ experience as a Cancer Patient Advocate and Navigator, I write this letter in support of Melinda’s fundraising efforts and hope and trust that her story will touch your heart as it did mine. She is a wonderful person and proactive patient whom I know will appreciate deeply, every dollar donated to her cause.

Our Institute has already donated some free services. Please donate to save and extend Melinda’s life. With airfares, accommodation, treatment costs I suggest an estimated fundraising target of $80,000.

Please feel welcome to contact me in support of Melinda and with regards to any aspect of this letter.

Yours Faithfully

Grace Gawler

Another update from our beloved Min.
Our love and support helps to keep her strong so let's keep it going ....

After 2 weeks in Tokyo for a second round of treatments, I’m happy to be HOME SWEET HOME!

Overall the concoction of treatments went really well. A couple of minor hiccups along the way but nothing I can’t handle! Now patiently waiting to see how my body responds over the next 4-5 weeks.

My recent PET scan results were very positive in that it has shown the primary tumour in my bowel as ‘Not Detected’ and many of the tumours on my liver to be currently inactive due to the treatments I’ve had over the last 7 months within Australia and Japan. However, there are still visibly active tumours on my liver that need very delicate care & attention.

My focus now is working through the next steps, the timing of these and trying to balance this with my ongoing health and response to the latest treatments in Japan.

Sometimes the most challenging part of this journey is the constantly changing paths. It feels as if you can never be sure of the next step... there are always so many variables to consider.

I will never stop thanking everyone for your overwhelming support! It helps keep my mind strong and continually focused on being proactive rather than reactive. I’m lining all my ducks in a row, ready to say #fucancer sooner rather than later

I’m so lucky to be surrounded by an army of people who are so selfless, generous, caring, thoughtful & % genuine!

Always remember to LIVE LAUGH LOVE x

Hi all,

I’m off to Japan again for my next round of treatments. It’s been a roller-coaster ride over the last few weeks since we received advice that there is currently no surgical option for me within Australia, despite my excellent results so far to date from chemotherapy, stem-cell immunotherapy in Japan and additional targeted complementary treatments which are ongoing. Doctors in Australia want to keep me on chemotherapy; however that will not cure the cancer, just manage it, and it will continue to smash the rest of my body. The disappointing news that local options have been exhausted for the time being, I’ve endured a time of great uncertainty.

However, in conjunction with the Grace Gawler Institute, we have gathered additional data which has shown that the colon cancer has largely dissipated, and some of the liver lesions to be inactive. We have formulated a new plan with various options offshore.

This trip to Japan is expected to be for 2 weeks and I will undergo additional AIET stem-cell immunotherapy, hyperthermia & other medical treatments.

The trip to Japan a couple of months ago, successfully helped to repair my immune system from dangerously low levels; for this trip the intention is to further enhance my immune system even more and retrain the natural killer cells to fight back against the cancer. All going well and on the basis I keep my strength, there could be a surgical option for me in Singapore and other offshore treatment in coming months. One thing at a time, but there are options going forward, contingency plans and things on the back burner.

I cannot thank everyone for their continued support; the army behind me is a source of great strength and inspires me to keep fighting for the ultimate prize of LIFE!
