On June 12th, our community was shaken to its core. We lost many souls, people's families were ripped apart and futures were stopped short. Those left behind have long roads ahead - not only in physical and emotional healing, but also in piecing back normalcy and regaining control of their lives.

Two of the communities most impacted were LGBTQ and Hispanic (or Latinx now used as an inclusive term).
Both of these groups have typically encountered roadblocks in gaining educational and financial advantages (high school graduation rates amongts Latinx people are lower than other groups and only 15% of young Hispanics have college degrees;  40% of homeless youth is LGBTQ and a percentage of gay youth who experiences harrasment in high school chooses not to go to college).

As both gay and latino, I know first hand that it was through education that I not only was able to shape my future as an immigrant in this country, but also be empowered as a gay man while in a non-inclusive world many years ago to stand proud regardless of any adversity. As our society changes and becomes more inclusive, and becomes aware of all segments in our society that are in need, we can send a message to those communities and provide them with a symbolic and tangible way to be educated, to evolve and to be empowered.

This is why I am supporting the Valencia College Foundation, which I am on the board of, in their mission to have an endowed scholarship in memory of the Pulse tragedy.  A scholarship committee composed of members of faculty and staff, as well as students who stepped up, has raised over $22,642 [UPDATED].

With $7,500 more, this scholarship can be an endowed scholarship, and forever continue to change people's lives, in memory of the events in our community.

As we meet that goal, we can also continue the message of love, support and empowerment, to those who can attend the University of Central Florida. I have started the proceedings to register a similar scholarship with the same name at UCF and after we finish raising funds for the Valencia College scholarship, funds raised through this account can go to the UCF scholarship.
