Kit's Battle With Cancer

Donation protected
Hi Everyone,

Please help Kit in his fight against cancer.  In July, 2014, Kit started having headaches and neck pain.  After  numerous tests and, after taking various types of antibiotics, the symptoms persisted.  Doctors finally did a CT Scan for Kit, which revealed a tumor in the nasal passage.  It was stage 3 nasopharyngeal cancer.   After months of radiation and chemotherapy treatment, the doctors said that the cancer was gone.  Kit went back to work, with the hope of rebuilding his life.

Shortly thereafter, his hope was dashed -- a PET Scan in September of this year showed that the cancer had came back.  The cancer had metastasized to Kit’s lungs and lymph nodes.

Twenty years ago, Kit survived a rare bone marrow disease called Aplastic Anemia.  His childhood experience with this life threatening disease had a great impact on his view and appreciation of life.  For those who know Kit, he is one of the most loving and caring persons.  Kit has shown us how to appreciate small moments of happiness in life.  He likes to surround himself with what he loves; family, friends, books and his dog, Coffee.

Kit is the only child in the family.  As both of his parents have been retired, Kit's unemployment has created a great financial burden for his family.  It was fortunate that part of the medical bills were covered by COBRA insurance; however, Kit will be unable to work while he is fighting his illness, as he has lost a substantial amount of weight and is very weak.  The monthly retirement benefit of his parents is not enough to cover the family’s living expenses and Kit's continual medical expenses.  During the past year, they have been relying on their savings to get by and are still left with many outstanding medical bills.

Kit is currently on chemotherapy. His oncologist said that there is no cure for cancer that has  spread to other parts of the body.   Kit's hope is to try to turn his cancer into a chronic disease and to survive with it.   Chemotherapy will just buy him some time before the cancer cells develop resistance to it.  Also, because of his history of having Aplastic Anemia, Kit's oncologist worries that too much chemotherapy could cause bone marrow failure in his body.

Kit believes that his best chance to survive is not through chemotherapy, but through immunotherapy, an alternative cancer treatment that uses one's own immune system to kill cancer cells, without the side effect of chemotherapy.  Unfortunately, immunothearpy for nasopharyngeal cancer has not been approved by the FDA here in the U.S.    After continuously searching and numerous consultations with doctors specialized in alternative cancer treatment, the family finally found a cancer center in Japan that specializes in immunothearpy (http://icv-s.org/english/flow/index.html).   Immunotherapy is widely accepted and routinely used to fight cancer in Japan, with some groundbreaking results.  However, immunotherapy treatment at the Japanese center costs around $60,000, which is beyond the means of  Kit’s family.

As a best friend of Kit, I know he is giving his best to fight this cancer, not just for himself, but for his parents as well.  As Kit always said, "Three of us make this family".

Please support Kit and his family so they can get through this difficult time, and to be able to afford the immunotherapy treatments in Japan.  We know that the battle for metastatic cancer is tough, but we shouldn't give up just because the task in front of us is difficult.  As Stephen Hawking once said " Where there is life, there is hope."

Thank you for all the kindness and support.

I am organizing a fund raising event on January 9th to reach out to more friends wish to support Kit.  Your presence  means a lot to Kit at this point.  I am sure Kit is more than happy to see all your faces; so just come out and catch up with Kit and have fun with us.
